My aim was to compose a piece that young choristers would appreciate after intense and joyful days together. Through my music I wanted to share the range of emotions and the hardship of parting when they were to go home to their native countries again. The choice of such a beautiful and evocative text helped me a great deal to achieve this. Farewell is recorded by S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir and Gary Graden on the cd To the Field of Stars (Footprint Records FRCD 083). My Song is like a little brother to Farewell. From the very beginning, I had a strong feeling that the assonance between the words of the title, 'my song', and 'my son', was intended by the poet. Throughout the composing process, this kept coming back to me, bringing my little son, Giovanni, who is four years old, to mind. Greg Shapley #1984573. Published by Greg Shapley (A0.966354). Phrygian Swell is an easy to play round for recorders in three parts (it may also be played by many other instruments). It is written for near-beginners, but its designed so that the sum is greater that its parts. Included in this score are two versions. The original changes time signature every bar (eventually getting up to 23/4). It plays with a number of concepts, all designed as educational tools. Firstly, it is written entirely in the mode known as Phrygian. This mode has a distinctive mystical sound primarily due to its first interval – which is a minor second. Secondly, it has been written to get players thinking about time without being too challenging (so despite the change of time signatures, most notes are just crotchets). Another educational facet of these changing time signatures is that they ascend by primary numbers. Thirdly, being a round it gets young players used to playing different parts with other players, while initially being able to rehearse altogether. Fourthly, this piece is comprised entirely of scales, but it doesn't just sound like an exercise (I hope). The second version, barred in 4/4 is exactly the same as the first, except for the rebarring. This is done in case following the continually changing time signatures is too difficult (although it does defeat the purpose of the piece to a certain extent). This version of this piece was written for three alto/treble (transposed from the original for descant/soprano or tenor), but due to its simplicity and range, could be played by many other instruments.

Both “Honey Bun� and “The Sharpest Smile� derive their comedy from the age-old, vaudevillian gimmick of a girl pretending to be a boy and vice versa. In the context of the Love Birds script, “Vera� (a female parrot) is costumed as a 1920s (male) gangster talking to “his� gangster friends. “The Gangster� character explains that “he� has met a wonderful girl (named “Pearl�), so don’t expect to see “him� around as much; or lyrics to that effect. Later in the number, we learn that “Pearl� is in fact a hungry crocodile dressed in a lady’s bikini costume (i.e. two coconuts strung together for the top – also an homage to “Honey Bun�). Pearl constantly tries to take a bite out of the Gangster Parrot who is blissfully unaware of the threat. This is a comedy song about mismatched relationships, but it also serves as meta-commentary on the dangers that pursuing such relationships can pose. In other words, “Pearl� is “Peril� (at least according to the thinking of the time). Despite the implicit risk, this unconventional love story seems to work out in the end. You don't really hear this song until Christmas; however, with the latest troubles in the Middle East this song is the perfect song to learn and play at any time during the year.  I arranged it thinking about the continued conflict in Ukraine, the new conflict in the Middle East and the continuing gun violence in our own country. The song builds to the 3rd section where you can hear the anger come out because we cannot just get along. This section comes to a quick end and gives into a very calm end. This ending represent a reflection of what could be if we all did our part. Enjoy!!!!

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition. As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

Published by Jeremy Cullen (A0.939554). This piece is part of a cycle of works composed as the soundtrack to an imaginary documentary called The World of Eugène Atget. If the film did exist, I’d like to think that this music would make a suitable accompaniment to the French photographer’s haunting images. In 2005 I saw an exhibition of Atget's work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and was captivated by his photos of Old Paris in the early 20th Century. He viewed his images as documents rather than art but they are beautifully atmospheric and influenced the Surrealists. Of course, this Gymnope�die was also inspired by Erik Satie who lived and worked in Paris around the same time as Atget (although I don't know if they ever met).
