The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

The harmony of the right-hand arpeggio changes slowly and subtly as the melody floats above. Some high ledger lines, with note above three lines alphabetically marked for ease of reading. Chromatic harmony with mixed accidentals in right hand. A joy to play, and very pleasing to the listener, I think, anyway... if I don't believe in my music, how can I expect players and teachers to do the same! Lasts about a minute and 45 secs. A faster OR slower tempo yields a more cascading or contemplative effect.

Published by Jeremy Cullen (A0.939554). This piece is part of a cycle of works composed as the soundtrack to an imaginary documentary called The World of Eugène Atget. If the film did exist, I’d like to think that this music would make a suitable accompaniment to the French photographer’s haunting images. In 2005 I saw an exhibition of Atget's work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and was captivated by his photos of Old Paris in the early 20th Century. He viewed his images as documents rather than art but they are beautifully atmospheric and influenced the Surrealists. Of course, this Gymnope�die was also inspired by Erik Satie who lived and worked in Paris around the same time as Atget (although I don't know if they ever met). My recording of this piece can be found on the album Scenes Vol. 1 by Jeremy Cullen, available on on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Amazon.
