Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1023535

Composed by Phil Jackson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 124 pages. Pjkj music #6078105. Published by pjkj music (A0.1023535).

I spent many happy days sailing the Severn River (where the Navy Academy is located by the Chesapeake Bay).  The piece begins with the launch of the boat in a calm inlet, followed by the sudden catch of the wind in the sails - tacking from one side of the river to the other.  The exhilarating ride is then interrupted by a storm, followed by the Navy Hymn (homage to when a navy yawl rescued me in a storm).  The piece ends with a procession of the beautiful genoa jib catching the wind on the return home, with a recap of the calm waters of the inlet.  Enjoy Sailing the Severn!

I would be delighted to do so.Ć¢ā‚¬Ā He. 90 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #32449. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869339).

Program note.
Maestro Charles Ansbacher has been a devoted supporter of my work for many years. In the past 6 years he has commissioned me to write two works for his ensemble, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra:

1) Mambo!!! (2003)
2) Pluto ā€¦ The Lord of the Underworld (2005)

This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofievā€™s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Bostonā€™s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great!

The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevensonā€™s poetic design.

I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable.

In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores.

In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace ā€“ the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog.

In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmstedā€™s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind ā€¦ a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

Composed by Kevin G. Pace, Kathryn W. Hales. Christian,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 3 pages. Kevin G. Pace #3125373. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.701458).

An original hymn about pioneer women. See the text by Kathryn Hales below.
YouTube video: https://youtu.be/fHirSHGBR0M

The women walked alongside the wagons,

The burden on oxen to spare,

Wrapped in a shawl or a blanket,

Their feet often calloused and bare.

They met at the quarter-masterā€™s wagon,

Their own scant rations to receive,

Then with culinary skills prepared

A meal, a familyā€™s hunger to relieve.

Their prayers arose like incense

From the campfiresā€™ spark-filled glow,

That the God they believed in from Heaven

Would bless their loved ones below.

Left alone to drive the wagons

When military duty was the demand,

Courageous pioneer women

Obeyed the prophetā€™s commands.

Some lived to complete their journey;

Some died by the trail on the way,

Yet the trials or hardships encountered,

Their faith in God did not sway.

Whether over the rivers or mountains

They trudged onward each day,

Till they arrived in The Valley,

And prayed for more courage to stay.

Praise be to such pioneer women,

Who with courage did their part,

For the building up of a holy people,

With Zion a goal of their hearts.

Valiant men have always needed

Virtuous women by their sides,

So both can progress together

And in Godā€™s eternal home abide.

In Little Seeds you will find new hymns from my heart. My devotional life is given to you in my hymnwriting. During the past three years I have been writing songs for the unity of the church - songs reminding us of our baptism. I have been writing biblical story hymns for lesser-known characters. I have written paperless songs that may be easily memorized. I set a Rumi poem. There are new hymns for Christian missions from everywhere to everywhere. You will find new texts and musical settings for folk songs from around the world. I hope I have treated these with the love and respect they deserve. You will find alternate arrangements of some songs that may be useful in different settings. Lim Swee Hong composed three tunes for this collection at my request. I am also pleased to include Lianne Tan's first published hymn tune in Little Seeds

Composed by Text: Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) Tune: Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914. Arranged by Ken Litton. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. 11 pages. Artist of Note, Inc. #1066874. Published by Artist of Note, Inc. (A0.1490010).

Whiter Than the Snow/Eden Reeder Latta  - Henry Southwick Perkins BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN
arr. Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristćo (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!
From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).
The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original.  The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.
The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.
I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.
