Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1042071

By Kathi Kerr. By Kathi Kerr. Arranged by Kathi Kerr. Film/TV,Instructional,Jazz. Score. 4 pages. Melody Music Publishers #646862. Published by Melody Music Publishers (A0.1042071).

This song is in the ragtime style, popular in the early 1900s. It was intended to be a serious form of music with dynamics and phrasing. It became a popular style played as fast as possible in saloons and theaters. Play this piece as ragtime was originally intended to be played with expression and at a moderate tempo until the final repeat, where it starts slow and accelerates. Change the dynamics when a section is immediately repeated to give variation. Tempo changes can also be a great form of expression (and more dynamic). Watch the fingering in the left hand and continue throughout. Practice the jumps without looking to learn how they feel. Bars 6, 8, and 9 are arpeggios on the fully diminished chord. Also, notice in bar 5 it changes to the E flat minor, which is the parallel minor, meaning it keeps the same name but has a different key signature. That is why there are G flats.

The kingdom of Efinmerle is a unique blend of natrual wonder and spiritual devotion.  The land is dotted with shrines and temples, where devout practitioners study the clerical arts, honing their craft in the service of their deith.  the centerpiece of the kingdom is its mystical waters, which are said to have healing properties and are frequently used in sacred rituals.  The landscape of Efinmerle is both otherworldly and serene, a place where the boundary between the physical and the divine seems to blur.  Visitors to this holy land are often left with a sense of awe and wonder, as they bear witness to a culture that has long mastered the art of spiritual enlightenment.

This piece was written in memory of my father. So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements.

  1. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.
  2. A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
  3. Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves.

Paregamutiún (Friendship): Four melodies of Armenian connotations for cello solo.

I am not Armenian, but these melodies could be: it is an invented folklore. Nevertheless, I never wanted to compose an imitation of real Armenian music; for that I should live in Armenia a few years, learn the language, soak in a couple of millennia of culture and impregnate myself with the current problems. And yet it would be doubtful that the result would sound authentic. Neither I was interested in composing some sounding touristic postcards. These melodies reflect, yes, how a thankful being sees the Armenian from outside. And this is what grants them legitimacy.

About the titles:

The general title of the piece, Paregamutiún, is translatable as friendship. Sometimes it is transliterated Baregamutyun (as a certain station of the subway in Yerevan).

The single titles of each piece refers to a lake, a mountain, a mythical patriarch and a tree of Armenia:

1) Sevanavank: Monastery of the Black Lake, founded in 874. The name Sevan means literally Black Van, referring to a lake called Van. It is said that long ago the Armenians came from areas next to the lake Van towards the lake Sevan, they noticed that its waters were dark, almost black, but they reminded them of the lake Van, and therefore called it black Van: Sevan.

2) Hayk is the patriarch of the foundational myth of the Armenian nation, and the original name of the country (Hayastán: land of the Armenians); some sources affirm that he was great great grandson or great-great-great grandson of Noah.

3) Dziraní Dzar: apricot tree, the Armenian national fruit. Dzar is tree and dzirán is apricot, the obvious phonetic similitude seems to underline a strong semantic proximity between both concepts. The letter Dz is a complex phoneme similar to a smooth th.

4) Masis is the Armenian name of mount Ararat, where -according to the Bible- ended up Noah's Arch after the Flood (Genesis 8:4).
