Then, I moved to another country, and for almost 11 years I didn't have access to a piano or full length keyboard, so it lay waiting in my heart all that time, until recently, sitting at my new digital piano, the sound came forth. It is the sound of the darkness of battle, of Jesus wrestling the keys back from the devil in that one decisive blow on the cross, and then the exuberance of victory, and the cry, It is finished.

Ne andrò lontana (Well then, I’ll go far away) is the aria sung by Wally when she decides to leave her home forever in the opera La Wally (1892).  Composer Alfredo Catalani originally created the aria as Chanson Groënlandaise in 1878 and later incorporated it into his opera.  The aria was also featured in the French thriller Diva (1981).  It has been arranged for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  This arrangement of an operatic masterpiece was created to make ‘Opera’ accessible to wider audiences for various reasons (instructive, educational purposes; and performance familiarity to/for a larger population).  The original melody and harmonies are used.  It retains the original foreign language text.  This arrangement is an excellent tool for introducing ‘Opera’ music in the classroom, and programming diversity in the concert hall.  Performance time: 2:21+-

Here is the 1931 Duke Ellington classic It Don't Mean a Thing (if It Ain't Got that Swing) done as a drum feature, with a very modern harmonic approach and aggressive melodic ideas. This fast swinging chart starts with energetic solo drum time, then the entire flute ensemble trades eights (as a soli based on motives from the melody) with the drums for two choruses before a brief statement of the melody. This is followed by open solos over the original changes, and an open drum solo. The chart then transitions to a half-time swing free-for-all with fragments of the melody flying in all directions, capped of by a brief return of the opening section. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely not the same old jazz flute choir experience! Scored for piccolo, five C flutes, alto and bass flutes, piano, bass, and drums, with optional guitar.

Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. I have always loved this hymn, and one Sunday morning when I had been called upon to write something lyric for our brass quartet (two trumpets in Bb, horn in F, and tuba), I went straight for It Is Well With My Soul.  This arrangement tells in music the story of Horatio Spafford and the circumstances under which he wrote the lyric for this hymn.  The piece opens with sounding of the horn of Spafford’s ship as she passes over the point at which Spafford's four daughters were lost.  The first verse builds dramatically as the lyric comes to Spafford and ends with the lovely chorus.  The next section is based on the third stanza of the hymn in which Spafford writes, My sin, not the part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross…  The horn gets the melody, evoking the sound of Spafford’s own voice, and the other instruments vividly paint the hammering of the nails.  However, as Spafford moves into the chorus, the harmony becomes dark and uncertain as Spafford’s grief overwhelms him; his faith wavers as he tries to believe what he is writing.  Then, the melody transfers to the trumpet as Spafford is answered by the higher voice from above-his daughters assuring him that, yes, it IS well, it is well.  The piece then ends with a peaceful statement of the chorus, evocative of the rolling sea and Spafford’s soul at peace.  This piece can be played by a student ensemble; the primary challenge is in achieving the level of expression and emotion required to pull off a piece like this.
