It is for piano students ready to move from beginners’ stage and looking for something a little more challenging. There are two versions of Variations in Blue, an Abridged version (single page) and a Full version (double page). The Abridged version could also be used by more advanced pianists for sight-reading practice. This piece has a simple bluesy theme followed by two variations; it concludes with the original theme. The Abridged version uses only the simple bluesy 16-bar theme. While Variation 2 (Full version only) changes metre from four to three, the speed of the beat is the same. To establish this, it may help to have students alternate counting in steady fours and then threes without changing tempo. The accompanying mp3 file is a demo version only.

My Variations on the hymn tune Gordon (My Jesus, I Love Thee) are intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations.  The four variations in this set display increasing rhythmic complexity as one plays them from beginning to end, ranging from continuous streams of eighth notes to eighth-note triplets to sixteenths.  The first, and simplest, variation can be played alone.  Variations 2-4 are written as a continuous group, though they too can be played individually if desired, by adding a conclusive tonic note in the bass.  For the most part the pitches of the hymn tune are presented without ornamentation, though there are occasional exceptions.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This set of variations is made up of 7 short waltzes I composed based on the theme of Brahms’ waltz in d, Op 39 #9.  My waltzes can be played effectively at many different tempos, and I play them individually for different exercises in ballet class.  For this publication I string them together as a short recital piece in the traditional variation set process by which each waltz is contrasted with the theme and with the other waltzes as to tempo, expression, and dynamics.  It will be noticed that I give no tempo, expression or dynamic markings in my score.  My own performance can be found in my album Variations and Adaptations for Ballet Class, Volume 3, Schumann and Brahms, but I welcome any pianists interested enough in this piece to play it to make their own decisions as to tempo, etc.
