DAVID LEE GINGRAS #1064956. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.1488079). I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and released on his album Going Public in 1977. Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976 after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975. It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977. Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976. This version was developed from a lead sheet and was simplified so that someone with average ability can play it and sound good doing so. We added root-based chord blocking and a few left-hand fills for rhythm - we hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!

It was introduced in the musical revue Jump for Joy by Ivie Anderson, who also provided the vocals for Duke Ellington and His Orchestra on the single Victor 27531. Recordings to reach the Billboard charts in 1941/42 were by Duke Ellington (#13) and by Benny Goodman (vocal by Peggy Lee) (#25).
