I've Just Seen Jesus is a classic contemporary Christian hit, made famous by the duet recorded by Sandi Patti and Larnelle Harris in 1985. It tells the exciting story as told by Mary at the time Jesus was dead and buried in the tomb, finding the empty tomb the 3rd morning, and then actually seeing the resurrected Jesus and speaking to Him! This arrangement includes the soprano and tenor duet (with a few of the high tenor notes lowered), guitar chords, and the piano accompaniment in advanced intermediate level. The first chorus is in the key of B Major, and then modulates to C major for the dramatic finale. A must sing for the Easter season or any time you want to celebrate Jesus' resurrection. I have a nice view from my studio window on the second floor of my house. It overlooks our big backyard, some trees and brush, a couple of fields, and some small mountains in the distance. My studio is set up so that as I play I can look outside.

This year in Tennessee we’ve had more snow than normal. There have been many school closings. Even Tennessee Tech shut down at times, which hardly ever happens.

So I’ve had some opportunities to sit in my studio in the middle of the day, look out my window at the beautiful falling snow, and write music.

I began today’s piece a few weeks ago, during one of the largest snowfalls I’ve seen since I moved here from Wisconsin. I composed a few measures that I liked, couldn’t think of where to go next, and put it aside for a time. For the next few days I kept coming back to it, always liking what I had already written, but not able to add anything new.

Then we had another snowfall. This time I was able to finish the basic structure of the piece, but I got stuck when I started to polish it up.

A couple of days ago it snowed yet again, and I completed the work and recorded it.

Today is Saturday, and it’s not snowing as I write this. However, they’re predicting more snow on Monday, which is usually the day I edit my blog posts. [Last minute update: No snow on Monday, although we did get 2 inches of rain.]

Apparently, this piece owes its existence to frozen precipitation. I considered naming it Paean to the Snow Muses, but I think I’ll stick with my original title, February.

These two traditional spirituals work well together. The arrangement begins with the arrival of the storm, which gradually fades and passes, resolving into a thoughtful reflection on the woes caused by the tempest. The storm returns with building fury but quickly passes, once again settling into stillness. Just before the song's ending, the storm echoes off in the distance, letting us know that our troubles may not yet be over. This is the ninth arrangement in my Contemplative Spirituals for Solo Piano collection.

Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. No matter the semantics, this is a charming and unique march close to my heart. 

This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own� United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Free Lance was composed in 1906, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 64.
