This is my second original composition. It has a Tom Kennedy-Mezzoforte fusion type feel. I wrote this a month ago, with total of three drafts. Writing a piece of music is like writing a screenplay. Very first draft had a motif to build the tutti section upon, a whole different melody, consisting of basically a complex melody, and the chord progression was two times faster. I wasn't happy with the direction, so I decided to slow down the chord progression, write a completely new melody, and only then I had the structure planned out. I named Episode, because my neighbor at the dorm, who is a classical pianist, said that this idea sounds like an episode (musical form). I am not sure if it reflects any understanding of said form, but I will say this. This is definitely an episode of pure passion. This package includes the score, parts: both transposed (Eb and Bb) and concert pitch, and the audio demo of how it should sound like.

This String Trio has been written for general performance and above all for the pleasure of the performer. I am aiming for maximum flexibility for the performers. All written dynamics are not to be taken too literally. Never think too much about volume (eg pianissimo is quiet and forte is loud), but rather think about the application of the bow (as in softer bowing for pianissimo passages and stronger/heavy bowing for forte passages)and think of the rising and falling dynamics as breathing. Also there are no specific bowings (accept for a down bow at the beginning of each movement). I will leave that to the discretion of the performers so they can decide what works best for their playing styles and technical possibilities (there is no need to follow slurs to the letter providing the slurred passages are smooth as I intend). One more thing is that the software I used doesn't make key changes as visible as I like so I have written a note to indicate said key changes. Still, I persevered in my efforts to revive and improve this early polyphonic essay, and hope the performer and listener will be as pleased with the results as I am. This three-voice fugue can be performed by any instrument or combination of instruments, including the harpsichord.

Usually on those flights I will work on music, sleep, listen to music, or watch a show on my phone. However, on this particular leg of a flight, I happened to spend a portion of the trip staring out the window (which is unusual for me as I am prone to bouts of vertigo for which I have series of techniques to stave it off) admiring the beautiful scenery unfolding in front of me. The opportunity to set this scene to music became a reality when Jim McAllister, director of bands at Lincoln Memorial University and one of my best friends in the world, approached me about a commission. I wrote him an expansive hypermetric piece (over 400 measures in one movement) that reflects my thoughts, feelings, and impressions as I admired the view from sky.Flying was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Lincoln Memorial University Band and its world class conductor, James McAllister.

I was immediately enthralled and haunted by the idea of setting the piano parts for guitar. So, here's the first of Quilter's five pieces. As is my wont I tried to stay as close as possible to the original piano score taking the liberty to pitch the piece down a semitone to a more comfortable E minor for guitar. And speaking of my guitar, I am used to a classical guitar with cutaway, thus you will find several sections beyond fret XII.I guess the arrangement is challenging even for well advanced players, but worth the effort because arranging it I found it to match the guitars scope much better than I thought it would be. But I also started to prepare a version for less advanced/intermediate players, hoping to provide it within the next weeks here at ArrangeMe.Well, enjoy yourself!

I wanted to write something based on a mediaeval mystery play and happened across an 11th Century version of the play of the Bridegroom – the tale of the wise and the foolish virgins. It was called Sponsus and is the oldest of this type of play written in both the vernacular and in Latin. What is even more extraordinary is that it is, in fact, a trilingual text in Latin, langue d'oc, and some words in the langue d'oïl. The passage which I have set is in langue d'oc, but for ease of singing I used a modern-French translation. This is scored for soprano, baroque violin, and viola da gamba. It can be performed at 415 or 440 ad libertum.I am very taken by the patchwork nature of mystery plays which is part promenade, part liturgy, part staged, part audience participation. I hope that having set a straightforwardly strophic text and using instruments more often heard in Early Music, jigsaws well with the more modern angular and sometimes dissonant nature of the melodic lines of this piece. I love the play of languages, and the mixing up through words and music of past, present, and future, revealing that time is perhaps a circuitous exploration rather than a strictly linear trajectory. And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time..
