Narratively, one can imagine a long troubled wait, a watch over a sick person, or perhaps a wake. The title also evokes the watch one wears on one’s wrist, with the seconds and minutes going by inexorably.

Once the flute enters, the waltz-like qualities of the music emerge. The two instruments trade off a whirling gesture until the movement ends in a celebratory mood. The Nocturne is peaceful, dreamy, and nostalgic, alternating between warmth and icy drafts. In its eerie middle section, one could imagine a setting akin to that of Marc Chagall’s 1913 painting The Fiddler which depicts a snowy Belorussian village. Finally, with its jazzy melody, funk-like bass line, and erratic rhythm, the last movement, Capriccio, is over in a minute, but it is a workout for both flutist and pianist!

Although it borrows its short melodic and rhythmic motif from Debussy’s still and calm work, its mood is diametrically opposed – in truth, an appropriate title for this movement might well be blood in the snow! After the texture unwinds, shatters, and disintegrates, the three instruments feel their way in the dark and gradually attempt to piece things back together. Nevertheless, the piano concludes with a muffled, resigned version of its introductory gesture, suggesting that nothing has been resolved. The second movement oscillates between contemplative and playful moods. This ambivalence is present from the start, when the searching violin solo of the opening is punctuated by playful bird-like comments from the piano. The clarinet ushers in a faster middle section during which the three instruments have a dialogue and both the bird idea and the violin’s rising

In the second movement, the mood shifts to a java, a popular dance akin to a fast waltz that flourished in France between 1920 and 1960. Remaining in the minor, this movement’s circus-like levity also conveys the grittier side of mid-century Parisian nightlife. Rather inconspicuously, the java incorporates in the piano accompaniment four measures from Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G minor (Op. 23 No. 5), ironically subverting the aristocratic march into the fold of the plebeian dance. Thus, the second movement also constitutes a nod to Mahler, who famously used klezmer music as a disruption in his First Symphony.
