The Bohlen-Pierce scale is based on the division of the duodecime into thirteen steps, which was discovered and further developed by Heinz Bohlen, Kees van Prooijen, and John R. Pierce beginning in 1972. The work was written as part of a series of new compositions for this instrument and was premiered at a performance concert on March 20, 2008 at the Forum of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Anna Christina Bardelli and Nora-Luise Müller performed. The American premiere took place at the first Bohlen-Pierce Symposium in Boston MA from March 7-9, 2010. It was co-sponsored by the Goethe-Institut Boston, Berklee College of Music, Northeastern University, and the New England Conservatory of Music.
