When I told Gil Rose that I had written symphonies for the cities of Paris and Rome, he said Why don’t you do London as your next symphony? I told him, But I’ve never been to London. He said, Well, now you have an excuse to go there. That never happened; going to London, that is. But I was very intrigued about writing a London symphony. So, I decided to go ahead, and instead of London as a travelogue symphony, something I did for Paris and Rome, I came up with an alternative idea. Why not compose a London Symphony in homage to three of my favorite English composers: Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar? This four-part a cappella arrangement has a lilt that those who know Britten's version will find familiar, but ranges more widely harmonically, moving into a variety of different keys as it passes the melody from lead to bass and finally to tenor.It increasingly explores both diatonic dissonance and chromatic harmonies as the emotional narrative becomes more troubled, evoking the poignancy of the lyric in both the shape of the lines and the way they rub up against each other.Vocal ranges:Tenor: E flat 4 - F5Lead: B flat 3 - C5Bari: B flat 3 - B flat 4Bass: E flat 3 - F4It is notated on two staves, treble and bass alta (i.e. bass clef sounding up an octave)

For instance, the word “minor� is set in pulsating minor triads. Also, the initials “E. B.� are sung on the pitches E and B. This composition shares similarities with music one might hear performed by a cappella groups on college campuses, such as humming and singing on neutral vowels like “Oh� and “Ah.� Elements of this piece also resemble 20th Century English choral music by William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in addition to Britten himself. Examples include abruptly distant harmonic changes, shocking cross-relations, and slow triplets that match the rhythm of the English language.
