Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England.This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ.The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm. She went on to publish several more collections of translated German hymns and is credited with, more than any other person, bringing the German chorale tradition to the English speaking world. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. Originally set for SATB voices, this original setting of the well-known Catherine Winkworth translation of a text by Martin Luther is here re-arranged for two-part mixed voices and is well within the abilities of even the smallest church choirs. In the natural minor mode, it has mild dissonance but is not difficult to intone. Care must be taken to not sharp the leading tone. It would make a wonderful addition to a church's Lenten or Reformation repertoire. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet.

Joachim Leander's Praise to the LORD, the Almighty, as translated by Catherine Winkworth, has consistently been one of the most published hymns in the English language since the mid-20th Century. Its anonymously composed tune, LOBE DEN HERREN, almost exclusively paired with this text since the 17th Century, is also much loved. Even J.S. Bach found it suitable to feature in his 137th cantata.  The title of this arrangement, Ponder Anew, as taken from the commonly used third stanza of the hymn, Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, invites one to consider afresh the attributes and works of Almighty God as one listens to this completely new setting of the tune. This arrangement for orchestra features three variations of the complete hymn tune utilizing metrical and harmonic changes to maintain focus on the tune and its text. These are bracketed via repetitions of the first five tune pitches in harmonic planing over a crescendoed pedal tone producing steadily increasing tension with unexpected resolutions of the beginning and concluding phrases. The music in not particularly difficult and should be readily playable by high school or higher level musicians. Yet, both musicians and audience will find the work interesting and enjoyable with music that reflects the majesty and mystery of its subject.
