Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. My father taught me this beloved skill, and he started me early. Near Galena, Kansas, there is a place called Shoal Creek which, as a small child, I called ‘The River And Throw Rocks.’ My sweet and simple memories of this place are what I aim to bring to life in this piece. It was while providing music at the memorial service for my friend David Bradley in 2008 that this piece started flowing through my fingers. As I improvised the prelude, this melody caught hold of me, and in the days following the service, I composed the rest.
