This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a violin solo with piano. It is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! The recording begins at the end of the introduction, in measure 8 - it was done at a youth camp as Chapel Prelude so there is some background noise. The charming French carol is given lively treatment in this version for solo violin and piano, suitable for advanced intermediate performers. With a middle section in waltz rhythm, and an extended coda, it is suitable for any Christmas concert or church service. The setting comes from my two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (available at Sheet Music Press) which I am gradually rearranging for different performers. There is already a version for solo flute and other instrumentation will be offered eventually. The melody is also associated with the Easter carol, Now The Green Blade Riseth. This is an arrangement of the old hymn in jazz style! Lots of fun for more advanced performers, it is suitable for recitals, weddings, contemporary church services, perhaps even synagogue events, since the tune is described as an old Hebrew melody. This is an extended, fantasia like setting of the Passion Chorale for solo violin and piano. It was originally written for violin and organ, also available on Sheet Music Press. The chorale melody was used by Bach in his St Matthew Passion, and is also in many hymn books as O Sacred Head Sore Wounded. For advanced performers, it is suitable as Prelude music throughout Lent, perhaps especially at a Tenebrae service. It could also be programmed as part of a recital. It is over 5 minutes in length. This lovely traditional Scottish Gaelic carol melody is perhaps better known outside Scotland as the tune used for the song Morning Has Broken, popularized by Cat Stevens. This is a medley of two old English carols, The Holly and The Ivy and I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In, in a jazz style arrangement. It was originally part of the two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, also available at Sheet Music Press.
