Stylistically evocative of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and the distinctive musical language of Arvo P�¤rt, Lament is based around a two-bar arching ostinato, artfully developing musical fragments and enriching the texture to reach a powerful central climax. This is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertory. This piece was recorded on the 2019 Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra CD Tree of Life under the title 'And Wept Bitterly (Lament on an Ostinato for String Orchestra)'. This complete set of parts includes: 4 x vln I, 4 x vln II, 3 x vla, 2 x vc, and 1 x db.

This arrangemen is in A minor. 
Besides the half step lower, very few notes have been altered.
I have added an advanced cello part to assist with the viola melody and the viola part assists the cello melody in the upper register.
Some notes were added to the bass part (in the proper register) to assist with the viola/cello changes.
At the climax, I was able to elimiate many of the leaps by making the Violin I part divisi and then re-voicing some of the other parts.
This will improve accuracy and intonation.
Suggested bowings are also added.

Pathétique means to move someone emotionally - to evoke sadness, to evoke pity. Pathétique was composed by Tito Abeleda for string orchestra. Influenced by Samuel Barber, Tito wrote this original poignant piece as a means to catharsis for processing sadness, reflection, and deep contemplation. Pathétique begins with an expressive violin solo, which sets the melodic motif and tone for the entire piece. Pathétique slowly builds, adding each string part as its own contrapuntal layer, which creates ever-growing, rich, lush harmonies that seeks to climb to the pinnacle of musical climax, resonating the fullness of emotional release.

Mercy is an obsessively expressive Adagio (so to say, an answer to Samuel Barber's Adagio) with a homophonic texture, like a four part chorale. Rhythmically, this piece offers no problems. While the part of the first violin requires more experienced players, all others are relatively easy to play. Most groups would be able to master this piece after only a couple of rehearsals.

 

Some would say that mercy is a virtue, others that it is a weakness. Do not seek in this piece a one-to-one musical transcription of merciful feelings, but rather concentrate on the smoothness and tender sound quality associated with it. Rather than pity, mercy is about empathy, togetherness and support - this attitude can also show while performing music.

Mercy was composed in 2013 and is dedicated to the flutist Cecilia Piehl Pierce.
