Published by David McKeown (A0.589122). Chosn Kale Mazel Tov, (Good Luck to the Bride and Groom), is a Jewish wedding tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas. Often shortened to Mazel Tov, it is thought that the song was written by Sigmund Zelig Mogulesko. Born in Romania, he was a larger than life character who dominated Yiddish theatre on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth century. Mogulesko was a childhood prodigy, equally adept as a composer, playwright, singer, comedian, actor and impresario. Mazel Tov was written for a wedding scene in one of his productions but has since become one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards.Mazel Tov is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo, with constant variations in the accompaniment. Mazel Tov is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Mazel Tov is perfect for wedding and concert performances, both formal and informal. Rumberos sing semi-improvised melodies over the Rumba clave rhythm with other percussion added, and the accompanying dance is an integral part of the performance. The rhythms of Cuban Rumba have travelled all over the world, providing the foundations for Son and Salsa and the ballroom Rhumba among many other styles. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady clave rhythm is implied throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style of the Rumba. Melodies are clearly articulated and played with passion.
