Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed Adoramus te, Christe the year the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock (1620). He was an Italian composer, string player and choirmaster. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history.

After the loss of his wife and subsequent years of depression, Monteverdi found his own renaissance in the Basilica of Venice as their music director. He invented opera and poured himself into church music, eventually becoming a member of a monastic order after surviving the plague. His exquisite small pieces were a great part of his complete works. As he aged, they reflected his journey through the stages of faith.

A setting of Thomas Hardy's poem of the same title.  Written in 2000, commissioned by the Mixed Choir of Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal), Kansas City, Missouri.  My friend John Schaefer was Choirmaster/Organist and Canon Musician.  The work is appropriate for Christmas Eve and Christmastide, or for a collegiate or community chorus holiday concert.

For the People is a setting of text adapted from Isaiah 9: 1-4, the first lection for the third Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany in the Christian church. It was originally composed for the Choir of St. Thomas the Apostle Anglo-Catholic Church in Hollywood, CA and its Choirmaster/Organist, Dr. Jeffrey Parola. The infectious motive within the piece draws attention to the notion that there will ultimately be no gloom for the people in anguish..
