Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.787360

Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Concert,Contemporary,Folk. Octavo. 12 pages. Burke & Bagley #4641623. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787360).

A setting for unaccompanied mixed choir (SATB) of the poem FIRE AND ICE by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963).  Duration ca. 3'15.

Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prize−winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems.  Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space.

Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. 21st Century,A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary. 7 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #893380. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.1303857).

Robert Frost wrote “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” in 1922. Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.” It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” in his collection “New Hampshire” in 1923.

I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. I wanted to be as deliberate as possible with the poem’s two concluding quintessential lines “And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.”

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Composed by Alan Bullard. Children,Christmas,Classical. Octavo. 36 pages. Colne Edition / BullardMusic #688801. Published by Colne Edition / BullardMusic (A0.1084615).

A seasonable celebration for SATB choir, optional youth choir and narrator, with piano (or brass quintet, or string quintet, score and parts available from www.colneedition.co.uk). Duration c. 25-30 minutes. This 8-movement cantata contrasts the cooking of the Christmas dinner with more reflective Christmas themes, with an opportunity for the audience to join in at the end. Ideal for Christmas concerts.
We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’.  In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten.  It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’
Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration.

Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences.
The Colne Choral Series contains a range of Bullard’s pieces for adult and youth choirs of all types, including cantatas and choral suites as well as individual movements. For full details please visit www.colneedition.co.uk or www.alanbullard.co.uk.
