German.The fact that Hermann Schroeder ranks among the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century shows especially in the simple church music form of the choral setting, e. g. in his setting of the sacred song Unüberwindlich starker Held, Sankt Michael. With his own typical archaic tonal language, Schroeder creates an a cappella choral setting (SATB) in which the dignity and the admiration of the heroic deeds of the Archangel Michael find their musical expression in a very compact form. The underlying melody (GL 924) dates from 1623. The author of the text of the Song of Michael is the German hymn writer Friedrich Spee. A very charming choral setting that can be easily mastered by any church choir; its five verses have to be sung alternately by the choir and the congregation.

Latin.Apart from a large number of vocal church music compositions, Hermann Schroeder wrote two settings of the responsory Ecce sacerdos magnus in honour of the festive reception for a bishop. The older composition was written in 1950 for a pontifical liturgy celebrated by Joseph Cardinal Frings on the occasion of the 7th Conference of the International Society for New Church Music and is now published for the first time. Although this hymnal chant for 4- to 6-part choir (SSATTB) and organ had been a regular part of the repertoire of the Choir of the Cathedral of Cologne for many years, it fell into oblivion after the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council and was rediscovered on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Cathedral Choir in 2013. This church music gem is ideal for festive occasions and a rewarding addition to the repertoire, especially for choirs with high artistic standards, just as high sopranos and a powerful tenor section.

Latin.Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.

German.Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) is one of the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century. Apart from more than 100 organ works and masses, he also wrote numerous motets. The present four-part motet Freu dich, du werte Christenheit for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) was written in 1975. This old Resurrection song from the 16th century is based on a setting by the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes des Cleve (around 1529-1582) which has been skillfully transferred by Schroeder to the modern age with subtle harmonies. The tenor voice sings the cantus firmus and is embedded in archaic-seeming sounds typical of Schroeder by the other voices. This three-verse Resurrection song of about five minutes is perfect for church services at Easter.

For many decades, he conducted the Bach-Verein of Cologne and wrote numerous motets and masses, including 'Missa dorica' (Schott, C 33719). His liturgical choral works are deliberately easy to sing and are tailored to the needs and requirements of practical church music. He followed on from the art of classical vocal polyphony and gave the individual linear parts a life of their own in moderate modernity. In the present small motet (of about 2 minutes' duration) the cantus firmus is in the bass.
