 It Came Upon a Midnight Clear is a poem and Christmas carol written by Edmund Sears in 1849, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. Sears' lyrics are set to Carol, composed by Richard Storrs Willis in 1850.  This arrangement features an SATB choir that each part comes in at different times and sing together after the instrumental interlude by the flute/violin, and starts with the piano imitating Christmas bells.

Yes! A choral arrangement of a Bob Dylan Song! This is an SATB+piano arrangement of one of Bob Dylan's perhaps lesser known folk tunes, but one of his most plaintive and heartfelt songs. With Dylan's exquisite sense of analogy, he paints a heartfelt portrait of Americana. The difficulty level would be intermediate. This is an excellent example of homophonic choral writing in an authentic American style, emphasizing characteristics of American folk songs, connection to nature and humanity. This would be an excellent show stopper, end of concert, or other appropriate place in a program. For students, this builds choral tone, has solo, unison, two, three, and full choral singing, and a small solo. The theme builds community, and respect and love for nature and humanity. Commissioned by the Donald Sinclair Sutherland Endowment for the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Chancel Choir, Matthew Robertson, Conductor, and was premiered on March 24, 2019 at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Maryland. The text is adapted from a chapter of the 1923 prose poetry book titled The Prophet by Lebanese-American author Kahlil Gibran, who was influenced by Christianity, Islam, and Sufism. It addresses a path out of despair and meaninglessness through working with love, a message that has as much relevance to today’s world as that of a century ago. -Melissa Dunphy.
