If There Is Love was originally written for choir and was premiered during a service at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas.  Brenda later transcribed it as a piano solo dedicated to the memory of her mother, Dorothy Duncan, who was a living embodiment of humility, grace, mercy and love.

We Three Kings of Orient Are was written by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. in 1857.  He was a church rector and wrote this carol for a Christmas pageant.  Included in Brenda Dillon's Memories of Christmas Collection - Book 1, this arrangement begins with a lilting introduction before establishing the melody at a slower tempo.

The Snow Lay on the Ground is a traditional Irish carol.  Since the actual date of Christ's birth is not known, mention of snow raises questions.  Christmas wasn't celebrated on December 25, until 336 A.D.  This arrangement is included in Brenda Dillon's Memories of Christmas Collection- Book 2.  It's written in 6/8 meter and has a lilting dance feeling.

There Is a Balm in Gilead is a traditional spiritual which contains a reference from the Old and New Testament.  A balm is a salve for a wound, and figuratively, it means a universal cure.  The lyrics suggest a promising healing to those who suffer:  There is a balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole, There is a balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul. Mary Had a Baby is a 19th century spiritual that reflects experiences and cultures encountered by enslaved Africans. Deep River, perhaps the best known and best-loved of all spirituals, referred to the slaves' yearning for freedom and the rivers that would have to be crossed to get to the Promised Land.  They thought of these mighty waters as rivers flowing into distant horizons.  Campgrounds may refer to secret worship services.  They sang longingly:  Deep River, My home is over Jordan, Deep River, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. Yuletide Medley includes three beloved carols - O Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and Silent Night.  The text of the first one was written by an Episcopal priest.  The second one may have been influenced by Felix Mendelssohn, a contemporary of the composers.  Silent Night is an Austrian folk-carol originally composed for soloists, choirs and guitar, but was first sung as a duet with guitar accompaniment.  It is one of the most recorded songs in the world. All My Trials is a folk song which became popular during the social protest movements of the 1950s and 1960s.  It's classified as a spiritual because of its biblical and religious imagery.  Joan Baez suggested it began as a pre-Civil War era Southern American  gospel song.  It tells the story of a mother on her death bed, comforting her children.  No matter how bleak the situation seemed, the struggle would soon end:  Hush little baby, don't you cry, You know your mama's bound to die.  Too late my brothers, too late, but never mind, All my trials Lord, soon be over.
