The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1408124). This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

I had a lot of fun writing this piece. The idea came from one of my composition friends from my time at University. He enjoyed writing a lot of anime style music - especially using the anime chord progression which is what I use in the composition. I didn’t want to the piece to sound too much like an anime opening so I did alter the chord progression a little here and there just to make it’s own thing.I am quite happy with how this piece turned out though, the chord progression does provide for some really nice and smooth voice-leading which makes the whole composition more seamless. There are a few different melodies in this piece although I did try to use the one melody and create the other ones based off of that. That is a skill I’m still working on and it really pays off when it’s done well.

This piece takes you on a journey of the rain starting to come down drop by drop to pattering down in the morning. The piece begins with slow moving chords that represent the rain starting to come down drop by drop. As the left hand moves onto an arpeggio accompaniment the rain starts to become more active. Then the melody also becomes more active with the faster rhythm. Finally, for the rest of the piece the right hand plays semiquaver arpeggios as the rain is coming down more rapidly than before. The melody has moved to the right hand and could reflect the larger raindrops pattering down on the ground. The rain finally comes to an end at the end of the piece where it slows down and quietens.

The starting point for this piece was just reflect the breathing in and out of the morning air. The piece begins with a slow, flowing left hand which prepares the entrance of the melody in the right hand. The melody floats above the right and takes it’s time as if it’s breathing or flowing with the air. there are quite a few different motifs/melodies in this piece which could be representative of the changing nature of the wind and air throughout the day. There are moments when it is more calm and still, moments when it is flowing freely and rapidly around, and there are moments when it is more active and creates a whirlwind. While the sudden change between different themes is ok, If I wrote this piece again, I would try to create a better connection between them.

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition. As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

I wrote this for a composition assignment at school one time and it started out with the moving bassline that is present for nearly the entire piece. The title itself describes the piece - “moving bassline�. After coming up with the moving bassline, I wrote the melody on top which is used throughout the piece and built upon. This piece uses a ternary form which is one of my favourite forms to write in. I especially like going in a slightly different direction the second and final time the A section comes around. So in the first A section, the bassline is introduced and the melody comes soon after. The bassline then transitions into the B section which features a mobile melody on top of the bassline. This was a lot of fun to write as I came up with 8 bars first and then repeated that theme two more times but with a more intense variation each time. Then in the final section of the piece, the original motif returns with some variations to keep it interesting and fresh.

This is probably one of my favourite pieces, it really turned out how I wanted it to. The opening bars at the beginning of the piece introduce us to the style of the piece and provide short fragments of the motifs that are to come later in the piece. In bar 9, the main theme of the piece is introduced which is a arpeggiated open-voiced chord starting in the left hand followed by the right hand. That ope-voiced chord is one of my favourite chord voicings as it just has a beautiful airy sound and that’s what I wanted the focus of this piece to be.I wanted to change things up in the middle section as you can hear with the left that takes the melody and the right plays a chordal accompaniment. This is actually a little homage to a piece I learnt on the piano when I was younger, there was a section similar to this that I really liked the style and writing of so I decided to use it in this piece. One last thing, this piece was originally called ‘Cloudy Day’ and it was a standalone piece but I changed the name when I added it to this album to keep it one word like the other pieces.

Now Whiskers has come across this mysterious house in the forest, he approaches it with curiosity and cautiousness. This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

When I wrote this piece - I actually decided to base it off a piece that I learnt when I doing piano exams when I was a lot younger. I used the structure of the piece to inspire my writing, copying things like the phrase lengths and the general style and feel of the piece. I find that’s a really good way to go about writing a piece when I’m not feeling too inspired. Taking a piece you enjoy listening to and copying some element that stands out to you like the structure, harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, tone colour, etc. I mean the options are endless.Once you have a part of the piece that you want to copy you can really go from there and just make the piece your own. As long as you don’t copy too many aspects of the piece then you will come up with something original because no one is you. I highly recommend trying this writing technique if you write music as it really helps you to just get started on your music.

This track sets the scene for the whole album, a short but exciting story about the adventure of the curious squirrel named Whiskers. The title of this piece is a cliché for fairy tales but I thought it would fit for this album as the idea of the album is a bit of a fairy tale, or somewhat of a magical story.The piece encapsulates the entire story from beginning to end, a kind of foreshadowing of what is to come. It begins with a slow but curious melody reflecting the curious nature of Whiskers and then the melody becomes more active as things begin to escalate. It then takes a turn into a very active melody with lots of movement as the story reaches its climax. Finally, the melody returns to the original motif that we heard at the start which leaves the door open for the rest of the story. We had a brief look into what is to come, but we are yet to actually start the story.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

This is my first original album, a soft piano album about the day of the week ‘Sunday’. Initially, I didn’t set out to write a full album, the piece ‘Sunrise’ ignited that idea after I wrote it. After writing that piece I decided to write more tracks and compile an album. I decided to write a total of 10 tracks, each reflecting on a different time during Sunday. The album begins with the sunrise which is the first track. You’ll notice that the whole album is in order from the beginning to the end of the day. After the sunrise it is morning and the frost begins to melt from the suns warmth in the air. Moving toward midday some light rain passes through followed by a thunderstorm then comes the afternoon, and the warm air. Finally, the day comes to an end as the sun sets on the horizon and then the stars revel themselves in the night sky.This album is meant to be a relaxing, peaceful album to listen to while you read, study, work, drive, or anything else you might do with music on in the background. I really enjoyed writing each track and it was a lot of fun to write a different piece about each part of Sunday. I hope that you enjoy listening to or learning these pieces and that they bring a little more peacefulness into your life.

Now that the story has begun, we are introduced to ‘A Squirrel Named Whiskers’! This piece is all about Whiskers, his curious nature, and the adventure he is about to set out on. The piece begins out as a timid, careful melody that slowly creeps around. Then the piece takes a turn into a vibrant and cheerful melody with a constantly moving accompaniment that reflects Whiskers’ energetic and vibrant nature.There are a some points where the melody goes off on a tangent which reflects Whiskers’ sporadic nature but he eventually returns back to his usual self. Halfway through the composition, the piece takes a turn and becomes much more active and tense. The loud dynamics as well as the foreign key reflect what Whiskers the Squirrel is known for, his curiosity to venture into dangerous and unknown places.Luckily however, he returns back to his safe and usual self which is reflected by the return of the original melody that we heard at the beginning. Like ‘Once Upon A Time’, this piece is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the rest of the album.
