Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1498151 Composed by Traditional Armenian. Arranged by Constance Shelengian. Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,Wedding,World. Score. 6 pages. Constance Shelengian #1074461. Published by Constance Shelengian (A0.1498151). For Solo Piano with Guitar chord diagrams.Traditional dances in ancient Armenia were essential to celebrations, holidays, rituals, social gatherings and more. This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6.  Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist. For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.799621 Composed by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score. 2 pages. Nicole Elyse DiPaolo #5791453. Published by Nicole Elyse DiPaolo (A0.799621). From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). It means The Sunken Garden, and I'll explain why below. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), large rolled chords, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions. On a more personal level, this piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of repertoire before moving away last year. The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1485695 Composed by Andrei Hadap. 21st Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score. 44 pages. Andrei Hadap #1062766. Published by Andrei Hadap (A0.1485695). A Holiday in Naples (2021, rev. 2024) I. At the CarnivalII. A Merchant at the Spinning WheelIII. In the BallroomIV. At the Opera             V. At the Plaza A Holiday in Naples is a five-movement programmatic work for solo piano composed in 2021 by Andrei Hadap. Composed in the late nineteenth century style, it depicts a lone traveller, on holiday, who explores the city of Naples in the same period. Each movement is a short scene that narrates the traveller’s experience during his visit through music. The first movement, At the Carnival, in sonata form, begins with a slow introduction as the traveller sets foot at the pier in the morning. The main allegro begins as he hears the carnival from a distance and proceeds to explore, represented by the scherzando-like figures. Short episodes of tranquillity interrupt the carnival as the traveller, in a reverie, looks out to admire the Neapolitan coastline. The piece ends as the carnival fades out into the distance. Contrasting with the festivities, the traveller encounters A Merchant at the Spinning Wheel, the title of the second movement. This encounter depicts the reality of the poverty-stricken region at the time. Here, the merchant is depicted in a trance-like state, as the monotonous arpeggiated figures at the piano are heard throughout. Later in the piece, we hear the agitated merchant spinning the wheel faster, distracted by the carnival, but eventually calms down towards the end. The third movement, In the Ballroom, the traveller enters a ballroom, observing the dancers from a distance. He finds himself drawn to a young woman, though slightly nervous, whom he invites to dance. In the middle section, we hear the awkwardness between them as they both stumble frequently. Eventually, he regains his composure and the two dance well into the evening. In the fourth movement At the Opera, the traveller then goes to a nearby opera house where he walks in during a love duet between a tenor and soprano. The final movement At the Plaza, the traveller encounters the carnival once again. This time, they are dancing a tarantella, a Neapolitan folk dance depicting the involuntary muscle spasms from a venomous spider bite. The traveller joins in and dances with them until sunrise.
