A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster.The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star.

This dance was based on the csárdás by Béla Kéler (1820-1882) titled Bártfai emlék which Brahms mistakenly thought was a traditional folksong. It is scored for traditional concert band and transposed up a semitone to G minor.

The Polovtsian Dances form an exotic scene at the end of act 2 of Alexander Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'. The work remained unfinished when the composer died in 1887, although he had worked on it for more than a decade. A performing version was prepared by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov in 1890. Several other versions, or completions, of the opera have been made. The dances are sometimes performed with chorus and last around 11 minutes. Themes from the Polovtsian Dances have been used widely in popular culture, notably the 1953 musical 'Kismet'; the most prominent example is the popular standard Stranger in Paradise, adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens, which opens this piece. This great piece, a staple of the orchestral repertoire, would form a substantial showpiece in any concert and important solos have been cross-cued for smaller ensembles.
