By Pat Metheny. By Pat Metheny. Arranged by Kevin P Holdgate. Jazz. Score and parts. 27 pages. Kevin P Holdgate #4968415. Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791046).

Versatile Brass Solo Collection

This is a full brass band arrangement of the classic Pat Metheny classic that I originally arranged for the fabulous Rob Westacott to play with The James Shepherd Versatile Brass. He recorded it on the groups' final album 'Legacy'. That arrangement is also available on Sheet Music Plus.

The music of Pat Metheny may not be instantly familiar to a brass band audience but as the recipient of 20 Grammy awards he certainly should be.

This is a great solo for the advanced player willing to try something new... the baritone and Euphonium players play the part of the train throughout... .

SKU: A0.927011

Composed by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Arranged by Dr. Jim Fox. Classical,World. Score and parts. 88 pages. All Brass Radio Publishing #3049973. Published by All Brass Radio Publishing (A0.927011).

  • This a British style brass band arrangement of Brahms' Trio, Opus 8 (for piano, violin, viola) that uses the major themes from Movement 1.  It runs around 5 1/2 minutes long, has deep chords, running triplets, and some incredible themes. Brahms was a master at filling and changing chords by using techniques such as running triplets.
  • Other parts are filled with full, deep chords made by the brass band that is much deeper than the original piano accompaniment and gives a unique sound that only a brass band can provide.
  • Instead of using the full Movement 1 as Brahms wrote it, just the melodies were used and woven throughout the piece.
  • It is a difficult piece with an extensive Marimba part as the primary percussion part. If after purchasing the score, you have trouble with the parts, email me at the address listed on the cover page.  Speaking of the cover, Brahms had a love affair with early trains.

Composed by Victor Ewald. Arranged by Edited by Roar Kvam. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 166 pages. KVAMusic Edition #5730969. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768517).

Victor Ewald

27 November 1860 - 16 April 1935

Ewald was a Russian composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He was born in Saint Petersburg and died in Leningrad. He also collected and published Russian folk songs. Ewald’s professional life, like that of many of his musical contemporaries, was in an entirely different field; that of a civil engineer, in which he excelled, being appointed in 1900 as professor and manager of the Faculty of Construction Materials at the Institute of Civil Engineers. Brass players however are indebted to him for something very different – a series of quintets which have become a staple of the repertoire and which represent almost the only, and certainly the most extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style. Ewald’s formal musical training began in 1872 when he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of twelve. Founded in 1861 by Anton Rubenstein, this institution was the first of its kind in Russia and it was here that Ewald received lessons in cornet, piano, horn, cello, harmony and composition.As an adult he worked alongside fellow musical nationalists known collectively as the Mighty Handful-Borodin, Mily Balakirev,

CeÌsar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and the most famous of all, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

All of these men had day jobs in non-musical fields.
Ewald’s contributions as a composer reflected an abiding love for brass

instruments for which he wrote his quintets scored originally for two cornets, alto horn, baritone horn and tuba.

I've edited these four quartets using Ewald's original instrumentation, but there are also separate substitute parts for the modern brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba).

Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 –1759) was a German-born Baroque composer becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received his training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712, where he spent the bulk of his career and became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition and by composers of the Italian Baroque.

SKU: A0.940770

Composed by Nick Walkley. Christian,Concert,Contemporary,Spiritual. Score and parts. 31 pages. Nick Walkley #3422709. Published by Nick Walkley (A0.940770).

This is a meditative arrangement of a well known Norwegian hymn. The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for trumpet sextet and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.

In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services.

The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:

I know a castle in heaven above,
shining as bright as the sun;
you'll find no sin nor sorrow there,
and never a tear is shed.

I am a weary traveller;
may my path lead me
from here to my Father's land;
God, bless me on my way.

We thank you for eternity
God the Father, one in three.
For you are gentle and mild to us
in Jesus Christ! Amen.

Note to conductors:

The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for even the best of bands!

An optional vocal part is provided in both Norwegian and English, but the arrangement functions with or without it.

Cues are written for important lines should players be missing, otherwise many of the parts are doubled across the band. Therefore this arrangement should be playable by bands from approximately 2nd/3rd division upwards even if some players are missing.
