Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1144852 Composed by B F White. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Chamber,Folk,Religious,Sacred. 3 pages. Mark R Lewis #745169. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144852). Beach Spring is an old American hymn-tune usually attributed to B. F. White, the co-editor of the music collection The Sacred Harp. Among the hymns that use this tune are Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service and Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters. The melody of the tune itself is pentatonic though many harmonizations end up disguising this. This particular arrangement by Mark Lewis actually embraces the pentatonic aspects of the melody and extends them throughout the harmony as well, causing the piece to require a 10 bell ensemble which is rather unusual and easiest to realize with five players. The time signature also is modified throughout the piece, starting in 8/4, moving through 7/4, and ending up in 6/4 which is basically the 3/2 time signature usually associated with the tune. By feeling the whole piece in variations of a Three Pattern the tempo marking of quarter-note = 200 is actually much more reasonable than it would first appear.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1076419 Composed by R. Kelso Carter. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score. 7 pages. Mark R Lewis #680575. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1076419). Standing on the Promises is a fun hymn from the mid-1800s. It was written by R. Kelso Carter, a Methodist minister and teacher at the Pennsylvania Military Academy. The tune has a martial feel and has been a standard in many church hymnals since it was written. This arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for 3-5 octave handbell choir. There are very few bell changes but the tempo is quite upbeat leading to some difficulties, especially in the fanfare-like introduction. The arrangement is also in 12/8 which may appear difficult but allows a triplet feel more similar to how most people would actually sing the the dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythms in the original tune. Most intermediate groups should be able to perform this arrangement with practice. The AGEHR ranking would be level 3.

Small Ensemble Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1144876 Composed by Irish Folk Song. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Celtic,Folk,Irish. Score and parts. 2 pages. Mark R Lewis #745195. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144876). The Maid of Culmore is an Irish folk song with surprisingly little documentation. It is thought to date from some time in 1800s from near the city of Culmore, but not much else is known. The city of Culmore was a center for emigration and the lyrics of the song discuss a young man and the search for his love who had moved to America. This version is arranged for 12-bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis for the AGEHR 2022 Composing Masterclass. If played by a quintet or sextet, the piece is simply a matter of counting and keeping track of the melody but if this is played as a trio or quartet, the arrangement will be quite challenging with many instances of a player switching between melody and accompaniment parts multiple times a measure.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1001565 By Trini Lopez. By Lee Hays and Pete Seeger. Arranged by Mark R. Lewis. Contemporary. Score. 8 pages. Mark R Lewis #6433781. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer. This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes. The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. The piece would be classified as Level 3+ using the AGEHR guidelines. You can find other arrangements by Mark R Lewis at http://www.makingjoyfulmusic.com/storefront.html.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1044825 Composed by African-American Spirtitual. Arranged by Mark R. Lewis. Easter,Holiday,Praise & Worship,Spiritual,Traditional. Score. 4 pages. Mark R Lewis #649443. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1044825). Were You There? is a wonderful African-American spiritual especially in the context of Good Friday and Holy Week. The lyrics ask the listener if they were there at Jesus' crucifixion and bring to mind contemplation of what the event would have been like. This arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for 3-5 octave handbell choir and adds handchimes for C5 to C7 as well. The singing bell technique is also utilized. This piece is potentially quite rhythmically challenging as there are many examples of triplet and duplet rhythms happening simultaneously. However, the actual techniques, bell changes, and overall difficulty of the parts is not too extreme, leading to a difficulty rating of 4-. Season: Holy Week, Good Friday Range: 3-5 octave.

Small Ensemble Handbell - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1045470 Composed by Traditional Latin. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Christmas,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 2 pages. Mark R Lewis #650051. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1045470). Enjoy the haunting melody of this 13th century Plainsong by Marcus Aurelius C. Prudentius. The text of Of the Father's Love Begotten is an ancient Roman poem by Prudentius but the tune often used is the Plainsong Divinum myserium. This arrangement is for 12 bell ensemble by Mark R Lewis and even though there are several time signature changes, it is relatively simple. The changes in time signature are simply an artifact of the fact that old chants make the music follow the text and do not force the text to fit the music. In the accompanying video, we have added singing bell on C4 and G4 but this addition is optional for the performance. Range: F5 - C7.

Small Ensemble Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1047376 Composed by Jeanette Threlfall and W. H. Monk. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Easter,Holiday,Sacred,Standards. Score and parts. 2 pages. Mark R Lewis #651935. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1047376). Hosanna, Loud Hosanna is a well-known Palm Sunday hymn that celebrates Jesus' special relationship with children and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Jeanette Threlfall wrote the text as a devotional poem in the mid-1800s. The tune most associate with the text, Ellacombe, comes from songbook of the Württemberg ducal court and was harmonized by W. H. Monk in the mid-1800s as well. The name Ellacombe is thought to be in honor of Henry Thomas Ellacombe, a specialist in bell ringing and an Anglican clergyman. This version was arranged by Mark R Lewis for 12-Bell ensemble. While the melody line for this arrangement is quite straightforward, the accompaniment part can be very active. Despite this, the piece should be quite manageable by most intermediate bell ringers. In the provided video of the performance, the bell tree is simply doubling the melody line and while this is a nice touch, it is not required for a faithful performance of the arrangement. Range: F#5-C7.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144874). Tell Me the Stories of Jesus is a sweet little hymn written in 1885 supposedly at the request of a Sunday school class. The tune is quite simple but still quite lovely. The lyrics were written by William Henry Parker and the tune by Frederic A. Challinor. This particular arrangement by Mark Lewis is for a bell weaving trio. Ringers 1 and 2 will need to be able to utilize travelling 4-in-hand techniques, Ringer 3 will need to be able to keep a very steady waltz pattern going while switching between bells, and all ringers will have some very quick bell changes. While the piece is challenging, most intermediate players should be able to perform it with sufficient practice time.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1234057 Composed by American Folk Hymn. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Christian,Folk,Religious,Spiritual,Traditional. 4 pages. Mark R Lewis #829593. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1234057). Many people are familiar with the story of how Amazing Grace came into being as a song. The tune New Britain has become so associated with the song that many people do not even know that the lyrics can be put with many other tunes. This arrangement for 12-bell by Mark Lewis does go with the very traditional New Britain, however it is quite unique. Even though this is a 12-bell piece with no bell changes, the arrangement sets the tune in three different tonal centers: F major, Bb major, and the mode of C Dorian. Additionally, verses alternate between the traditional 3/4 time signature and the not so traditional 4/4 meter. The accompaniment to the melody is very active, consisting of running eighth notes or syncopated eighth-note/quarter-note patterns for most of the piece.

Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1284588 Composed by American Folk Song and Scottish Folk Song. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. Score. 8 pages. Mark R Lewis #875763. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1284588). This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories. This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.
