Percussion Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.934216 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 22 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #6735411. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934216). Retracements (2021)This performance proposal features a performance of Retracements (2021) for percussion quartet commissioned by Kevin von Kampen, at the University of South Florida (USF) percussion ensemble. Retracements uses Fibonacci numbers and Phi proportions that mirror percentages used by stock market traders to predict corrections of trends in the market. Fib. numbers used in Retracements dictate the length of short sections in the work, while larger sections emerge organically and less predictably with regard to Phi (GS). In short, the work unfolds structurally through the impetus of determinate decisions combined with intuitive and indeterminate factors. In this light, the work is a musical realization of the retracement principle. I am indebted to Kevin von Kampen, assistant professor of Music at the University of South Florida, and members of the Percussion Ensemble at USF: Katie McCarty, Jacob Barber, David Grullon, and Wyatt Hatch for their careful preparation of the work (performance materials available from the publisher-MJICMusicPublishing@gmail.com).

The work’s title serves a metaphor for the give and take/leading and following that characterizes the interplay between instruments. Dance is playful, clumsy, whimsical, mysterious, and fantastical. String Quartet String Quartet - Digital Download SKU: A0.934207 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 44 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #3130883. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934207). String Quartet (2011)With tightly wound rhythms, dramatic figures, and an emotionally stirring performance, Mark Zanter’s String Quartet is nine attacca movements of beauty. American Record Guide  String quartet is an expansive single movement work, which during its course features members of the ensemble in various solo, duo, and trio combinations. The musical material-an interval series-is presented first in a fragmented, dissonant context that becomes increasingly consonant as the work progresses through sections that alternate intense rhythmic activity with calm, highly expressive solos.  The quartet was commissioned by the Ankara University Soloists String Quartet and was premiered at Marshall University Festival of New Music 2012 as part of their residency as Edwards Distinguished Visiting Professors of the Arts. The work received repeat performances during their subsequent mid-Atlantic tour.  String Quartet is approximately 20:00 in duration and is suitable for advanced performers. Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.934201 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score. 12 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #3130841. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934201). I wrote Impromptu Variations during the winter of 2001 when I was teaching at Minnesota State University Moorhead. During that time of year, the days are quite short, and the intense wind and cold make venturing outdoors rather uncomfortable. The subtitle, Waldstein Visited, refers to the Beethoven Op 53. piano sonata. The grey brooding weather and Beethoven's piece were at the moment, inspiration for the Variations; a piece which attempts to capture that peaceful, meditative feeling that besets one on dreadfully cold, quiet winter days. The work is suitable for intermediate to advanced pianists and will pair well with music of all historical eras. Duration: 7:00.

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.934211 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 6 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #6040427. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934211). Perpetuum Mobile (2014) for tuba, fixed media and processing was composed for George Palton, professor of tuba at Marshall University. I have worked closely with George engineering his solo CD, Tuba In Motion, and that influenced our collaboration on this work. George’s playing exhibits a full range of technical and expressive skills and the composition takes advantage of those strengths. The fixed media portion of the work was planned from the beginning; but as the work matured, processing was mixed with the live tuba enabling it to inhabit the same sound world as the recorded media. Overall the work is in three sections ending with a reprise of the opening material. Surface rhythms, textural changes, and the constant cycling of pitches occurring throughout the work exhibit the characteristic of moto perpetuo. A listener can perceive these myriad possibilities or simply enjoy the work’s virtuosity, lyrical melodies, changes of rhythm, and ambient sounds. Perpetuum Mobile was premiered on the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference 2014. I have to thank George Palton for the many great performances of the work.
