These atmospheric new arrangements are ideal for any Christmas or pre-Christmas concert, and especially for church performance. The five carols are: Resonet in laudibus (Let the voice of praise resound); There is no rose of swych vertu; Nova! nova! (News! news!); As I rode out this enderes [the other] night; Conditor alme siderum (Creator of the starry height). In each case the original setting is followed by increasingly full harmonies, the sopranino being used as a virtuoso decorative obbligato instrument (for example, providing birdlike sounds in #4, to illustrate the refrain 'so merrily the shepherds their pipes can blow'). Published by Douglas Brooks-Davies (A0.898108). An exciting new anthem for solo soprano, SATB choir and keyboard on the familiar text from Numbers 6:24-6. The first and last sections of the anthem repeat each other, and are in call and response format between soloist and chorus. The middle section is a rather lovely tune, which changes the opening section's D minor to an exuberant D major. The keyboard maintains an arpeggiated ostinato accompaniment throughout. The piece would suit any service in which a contemporary rhythmical setting is welcome.

This is followed by Sing, lullaby (the Basque carol Oi Betleem!) and Veni, Emmanuel (O Come, O come, Emmanuel). Some of the arrangements are much simpler than others, so there is something for all abilities.

Published by Douglas Brooks-Davies (A0.898101).  Among the many compositions for guitar by the celebrated guitarist Mauro Giuliani (1781-1828) is a collection of 16 charmingly tuneful dances, published under the title La Tersicore del Nord (The Northern Tersicore, this being the name of the ancient Greek muse of the dance), thereby suggesting that Giuliani felt the collection to be inspired in some way by what he understood to be a northern European spirit. Here are six of them, nos 6, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13, arranged for recorder quartet - soprano (descant), alto (treble), tenor and bass. The melodies are Giuliani's, the rest is mine, each part being given some at least of the fun in these engaging pieces. Tempo indications are also editorial. The original, entitled Variations sur l'Air Gestern Abend war Vetter Michel da (c. 1815), is for csakan in G and guitar (sounding in C). This arrangement retains the original key and fingering (csakan fingering is virtually identical to that of the recorder), and offers an accompaniment that retains the lightness and transparency of the original guitar chording.
