Oh Banquet Not – the lyric is by Thomas Moore set to the very famous tune Planxty Irwin written by Ireland’s most famous harper Turlough O’Carolan. Because the tune is so beautiful the first page is a guitar solo incorporating the tune before the voice joins in. Like much of Moore’s poetry there is a sadness to the words imbued with the sadness of Ireland’s turbulent history. The guitar arrangement is an original work by Simon James

Love Is Pleasing - this traditional Irish song exists in many versions but this one is based on a version recorded at Kilrush Fleadh Cheoil, County Clare in the Summer of 1967. The singer was a young Dolly Mac Mahon singing unaccompanied at the bar of the pub, the melody is beautifully decorated and I have borrowed some of her ideas. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions but adapted to suit a male singer. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore set to a traditional tune called Aislean an Oigfear, or The Young Man's Dream. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

The Song Of The Birds - El cant dels ocells is a traditional Catalan Christmas song and lullaby. It tells of nature's joy at learning of the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. The song was made famous outside Catalonia by Pau Casals' instrumental version on the cello. This version has the famous melody, with an original accompaniment written by Simon James on Classical Guitar, for solo voice. The lyric is the English one used b Joan Baez on her Christmas album Noel (1966).

Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.

In dulci jubilo (Latin for In sweet rejoicing) is a traditional Christmas Carol. Johann Sebastian Bach set this melody several times: as a chorale in BWV 368; and then for organ in BWV 608 as a double canon in his Orgelbüchlein and in BWV 729 as a chorale prelude. Clearly he was fond of the tune and who can blame him. This arrangement of BWW 368 follows almost exactly the four original voices from the chorale. The score is also available.

Süßer die Glocken nie klingen (Sweeter the bells never sound) is a popular Austrian carol with text by Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger to a traditional Volkslied (folk song) melody, first printed in 1860. This version is taken from the Vienna Boys Choir for both the lyric and the melody. I’ve arranged it for tenor and treble where the treble takes the melody for the first two verses but for the final verse the tenor takes over the tune while the treble sings what might be considered a descant. Joan Cererols (1618 – 1680) was a Spanish composer and Benedictine monk. Cererols was born in Martorell. He entered the choir school Escolania de Montserrat around 1626. Cererols took his first steps in music under the direction of Father Joan Marc, a famous organist. He is known today chiefly for a single villancico, the beautiful marizápalos a lo divino - Serafín que con dulce armonía . The marizápalos was a song with a special harmonic pattern that often served as a framework for improvisation. This arrangement is for guitar quartet and solo guitar (Guitar 5). The quartet parts are easy, the solo guitar part is more challenging. The piece is fascinating, at times a dialogue between the solo guitar and the quartet but at other times the quartet splits into two giving a dialogue between three groups.

The Cherry-Tree Carol (Roud 453) is a ballad with the rare distinction of being both a Christmas carol and one of the Child Ballads (no. 54). The song itself is very old, reportedly sung in some form at the Feast of Corpus Christi in the early 15th century. The ballad relates an apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary, presumably while traveling to Bethlehem with Joseph for the census. In the most popular version, the two stop in a cherry orchard, and Mary asks her husband to pick cherries for her, citing her child. Joseph spitefully tells Mary to let the child's father pick her cherries. At this point in most versions the infant Jesus, from the womb, speaks to the tree and commands it to lower a branch down to Mary, which it does. Joseph, witnessing this miracle, immediately repents his harsh words. This arrangement was created for three voices, Treble, Tenor and Bass with an accompaniment on two guitars for the annual carol service – A Star For Christmas. The voices do to some extent take on the characters of the three people involved, Joseph, Mary and the unborn infant Jesus in the context of the lyrics used.
