The singer was a young Dolly Mac Mahon singing unaccompanied at the bar of the pub, the melody is beautifully decorated and I have borrowed some of her ideas. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions but adapted to suit a male singer. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

The Song Of The Birds - El cant dels ocells is a traditional Catalan Christmas song and lullaby. It tells of nature's joy at learning of the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. The song was made famous outside Catalonia by Pau Casals' instrumental version on the cello. This version has the famous melody, with an original accompaniment written by Simon James on Classical Guitar, for solo voice. The lyric is the English one used b Joan Baez on her Christmas album Noel (1966).

I wrote this carol in 2004 for the annual carol service which became known as A Star For Christmas. I wanted to try and capture the essence of a birth where the mother knows her child faces death by execution from the minute of conception even though the purpose is to save humanity. I do not think you can remove the joy of it whatever the final outcome but it must have been an extraordinary realization for Mary at that moment. Score available.

They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. The English lyric, as with the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. The arrangement is for two voices and guitar where the guitar part is challenging but vocal parts are not.

A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.

This piece is based on the simple idea of an A major chord, a D major7 chord and an E9 chord in 5th position played with an unusual right hand pattern giving a time signature of 10/8. Don’t panic, if you play the right hand pattern correctly, as indicated, it automatically comes out correctly. You will find all the techniques you need in my book The Art Of Accompaniment On The Guitar. I have given considerable technical guidance both in fingering and the use of different strings as these pieces are intended to be instructional. DML #721997. Published by DML (A0.1120782). In dulci jubilo (Latin for In sweet rejoicing) is a traditional Christmas Carol. Johann Sebastian Bach set this melody several times: as a chorale in BWV 368; and then for organ in BWV 608 as a double canon in his Orgelbüchlein and in BWV 729 as a chorale prelude. Clearly he was fond of the tune and who can blame him. This arrangement of BWW 368 follows almost exactly the four original voices from the chorale. The score is also available.
