The Song Of The Birds - El cant dels ocells is a traditional Catalan Christmas song and lullaby. It tells of nature's joy at learning of the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. The song was made famous outside Catalonia by Pau Casals' instrumental version on the cello. This version has the famous melody, with an original accompaniment written by Simon James on Classical Guitar, for solo voice. The lyric is the English one used b Joan Baez on her Christmas album Noel (1966).

The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore set to a traditional tune called Aislean an Oigfear, or The Young Man's Dream. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

Love Is Pleasing - this traditional Irish song exists in many versions but this one is based on a version recorded at Kilrush Fleadh Cheoil, County Clare in the Summer of 1967. The singer was a young Dolly Mac Mahon singing unaccompanied at the bar of the pub, the melody is beautifully decorated and I have borrowed some of her ideas. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions but adapted to suit a male singer. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

Oh Banquet Not – the lyric is by Thomas Moore set to the very famous tune Planxty Irwin written by Ireland’s most famous harper Turlough O’Carolan. Because the tune is so beautiful the first page is a guitar solo incorporating the tune before the voice joins in. Like much of Moore’s poetry there is a sadness to the words imbued with the sadness of Ireland’s turbulent history. The guitar arrangement is an original work by Simon James

I wrote this carol in 2004 for the annual carol service which became known as A Star For Christmas. I wanted to try and capture the essence of a birth where the mother knows her child faces death by execution from the minute of conception even though the purpose is to save humanity. I do not think you can remove the joy of it whatever the final outcome but it must have been an extraordinary realization for Mary at that moment. Score available.

In the Bleak Midwinter is a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, commonly performed as a Christmas carol. In 1906 Gustav Holst composed a setting of Rossetti's words (titled Cranham) in The English Hymnal which is sung throughout the world and is the basis of this arrangement. A wonderful tune that works well on the guitar as a solo piece. The score is also available on Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct.

Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. According to the writer Joan Amades (1890-1959), who was curator at the Museu D’Industries I Arts Populars in Barcelona, these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. This is a full score of all three carols for reference purposes.

A popular Christmas carol, the tune usually used today is from an 1848 edition by Lowell Mason for The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). There has long been speculation over how much a part Handel's Messiah had in Joy to the World. However, resemblances between Messiah and Joy to the World, have been dismissed as 'chance ' by Handel scholars today. It seems likely that the tune as we know it was probably from an 1833 publication by Thomas Hawkes with the title “Comfort�, Author Unknown. I have combined Handelian elements with the tune that most people know to create an arrangement that works well for guitar quartet retaining the bounce and vigour of the carol. Score available.

Still, still, still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. The melody is a folk tune from Salzburg. The tune appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folksong collection of Vinzenz Maria Süß (1802–1868), founder of the Salzburg Museum. There are various English translations but this one is my own and I have tried to stay close to the original German version supporting the idea of a lullaby, a mother trying to get her baby off to sleep. I have added a fourth verse which is essentially the first verse but with the words changed so that the baby is now sleeping. Score available.
