This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a cello solo with piano. Also available as a violin solo, it is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! A MIDI recording is provided. Published by Evelyn R Larter (A0.749799). From the Piae Cantiones, 1582, the popular carol Personent Hodie is arranged here in its English translation. The refrain is in Latin, and somewhat reminiscent of parts of Carmina Burana! This was commissioned for a Lessons and Carols Service in a cathedral in my area several years ago. The choral parts are not difficult, however the organ accompaniment is more challenging - not wholly accurate in the recording! This is a set of supplemental string quartet parts for the beautiful Austrian carol, arranged in slow Jazz ballad style, but not intended for stand alone performance. It is from a set of international carols commissioned by clarinetist Lydia Calhoun for her CD, Carols for the King from Around the World, released in 2015. For more advanced performers, this perennial favorite is suitable for Christmas concerts and church preludes or offertories; it can be taken at either a moderate or a slower tempo, and is around 5 minutes in length. Those musicians who purchased Volume Two of the clarinet collection, or the solo version for cello and piano may be interested in adding strings to their performances.  See also the full score for clarinet, string quartet and piano, and for cello, string quartet and piano.
