Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. This, like ‘Lullaby’, also originally appeared on Wrestling Angels, and it was inspired by a particularly strong thunderstorm I experienced while visiting friends and family in Kansas when I was a teenager. The original recording was much more robust, and I really enjoyed approaching it anew as a solo piano piece for The Open Road. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This piece initially sprang, as most of mine do, from an improvisation. It was while providing music at the memorial service for my friend David Bradley in 2008 that this piece started flowing through my fingers. As I improvised the prelude, this melody caught hold of me, and in the days following the service, I composed the rest.
