The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1408124). This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

The title of this piece came from the use of swing in the rhythm. I wanted to write a piece with swing and that’s how this piece came to be. I wanted the piece to reflect a swing hanging from a tree branch on a summer evening with the sun starting to dip down below the horizon. The piece begins with a simple pattern that follows a chord progression which appears through most of the piece.As you listen to this piece, I want to relax and just imagine a place where you are alone or with someone you love, on that swing in the warmth of that summer evening. The swing is gently swaying back and forth in the breeze and the clouds are starting to set in as the night settles in once again.

Their shared curiosity led them to explore new paths, while their cautious natures kept them safe from danger. Every rustle of the leaves, every flicker of movement in the underbrush, became an adventure when they were together.Day after day, Whiskers and Pippin would meet at the edge of the forest, eager to explore each other’s favourite spots. Whether it was a hidden grove full of the sweetest acorns or a quiet stream perfect for reflection, they found joy in sharing these special places with each other. The once lonely woods now felt alive with the warmth of their companionship. They would chase each other up trees, playfully darting between branches, and when the day grew late, they would sit side by side, watching the sun dip below the horizon.The fear and hesitation that once filled their first encounter was now just a distant memory. In its place was a deep bond, forged through shared experiences and a mutual understanding. Whiskers and Pippin might have been cautious, but together, they found the courage to explore a world that felt much less daunting with a friend by their side. This track sets the scene for the whole album, a short but exciting story about the adventure of the curious squirrel named Whiskers. The title of this piece is a cliché for fairy tales but I thought it would fit for this album as the idea of the album is a bit of a fairy tale, or somewhat of a magical story.The piece encapsulates the entire story from beginning to end, a kind of foreshadowing of what is to come. It begins with a slow but curious melody reflecting the curious nature of Whiskers and then the melody becomes more active as things begin to escalate. It then takes a turn into a very active melody with lots of movement as the story reaches its climax. Finally, the melody returns to the original motif that we heard at the start which leaves the door open for the rest of the story. We had a brief look into what is to come, but we are yet to actually start the story.

Whiskers ears prick up as he hears that he is not the only creature inside this mysterious house. His little heart begins to race which is reflected in the opening of this piece. Whiskers knows that he isn’t the only one in this house but he is curious as to who else might be in here. He finds a safe spot under a table but keeps his ears and eyes out to hear who might be creeping around.The footsteps stop and start, they sound small but he’s not too sure. Whiskers once again can’t help his curious nature and he decides to venture out and find who or what this other creature is that has the same idea to explore this house. He makes sure to keep his footsteps light to not bring any attention to himself and not scare away the other creature. He looks around one room, and then another, covering almost the entire house except the attic. Whiskers decides to climb up into to the attic to find out once and for all what this other creature is.

This is one of my better piano compositions, I really did enjoy experimenting with different themes and ideas. I wrote this piece in about a week for a composition challenge in r/musictheory. The style of the composition is a Rag which is an early 20th century genre of music usually for piano that paved the way for blues and jazz. It features syncopated rhythms, colourful harmonies, usually a cheerful tone, and an “oompah” left hand pattern. It was really quite interesting writing in this style and I think it would be good to try it again.When I started writing this piece, I came up with the main theme of the piece first and then wrote the rest of the piece and at the end, I actually added the introduction. As for the other sections of the piece, it was difficult to come up with something that fits the same theme and style but also make it different so that it is interesting for the listener. My favourite section is probably the last one with the descending chromatic scales. I think there is a good build up and release of tension at the end of the piece as well.

The idea for ‘Sunrise’ actually came from a 30 day composition challenge in which you had to write a new idea for a piece every day for 30 days. I think the prompt for this one was a sunrise, hence the name of the piece. I think when I was writing the piece, I imagined watching a colourful sunrise amongst the rolling hills of the countryside which fade into the horizon. This is the only piece with a flute along with the piano which I think works well for this piece as it’s a relatively simple one.

This piece was actually the first piece I wrote for this album, I wrote it initially without even thinking that I would make an album out of it. So it has a special place in the album and is quite a simple piece compared to the other tracks. I wrote it during 2021 and then later I had the idea to make a music box album. About halfway through composing the album, I had the idea to create a story about a squirrel so this piece was written well before the title was written but it fits quite well in the story.Now that Whiskers has explored the outside of the house, his curious nature couldn't help but explore this mysterious house that he found. Slowly and carefully he creeps inside to see if he can find anything to eat or a safe place to call home. He creeps around and can’t hear a sound - just the sound of the gentle breeze rustling the leaves outside. Everything is damaged and abandoned. The wallpaper is torn and drooping, the floorboards broken and creaky, and the furniture has seen much better days.As Whiskers continues to look around, his ears are pricked to listen out for anything unusual that might be a threat….

How the name came to be for this piece is actually a funny little story. When I created all the folders on my computer for each track, there was one that I already had an idea for in that key and so I simply labelled it as ‘Taken’ so I knew that key was taken already.  Then when I came around to writing this piece, I thought “Why don’t I just use this word as the title?”, and that’s how this piece was born.The name then inspired the rest of the piece and I think the story in a general sense is the feeling of someone or something being taken away from you. The feeling of grief, mourning, and loss that underlies your day to day life from that point on. As the piece progresses, it moves through sections that are brighter or darker which reflect the up and down nature of these life experiences, sometimes you feel more hopeful and other days you don’t feel so great.

This piece definitely has a more sinister feel to it compared to the other pieces from the album, I think that’s just how it started out when I was writing this piece - the title came later. When writing this piece, I wanted to write something mysterious with more of a focus on the ambient side of things rather than the melody. Of course, this piece still has a melody but I don’t think that is the focus of this piece, it’s all about the mood and atmosphere. The beginning of the piece does have a melodic motif which is used throughout the composition and there is also the left hand ostinato that is given to the right hand toward the end of the piece too. Harmonically, this piece doesn’t stick to functional harmony which is another reason why this piece tends to feel more mysterious and ambient.

I wanted to write something a bit simpler which is how this piece came about. I remember one of my composition lecturers teaching us how to write a melody with a strong structure that a lot of film composers use for film scores. It was a really good way to write something quickly and it allowed me to come up with this piece a lot quicker than the other ones. While the overall structure of the piece is important to have a balance between repetition and variation as well as new ideas, the smaller structure of a melody is quite important too for the same reasons. You don’t want to just repeat the same melody over and over again or else it gets boring, but you also don’t want to just have 10 different melodic ideas because then the idea of the piece becomes lost and it’s hard to follow where it’s going.As for the name of the piece, I came up with it after I had written it so it didn’t influence the composition process in any way. I listened back to the piece a few times to come up some ideas and write some different names down but this word stood out to me. It has a gentle feel and a kind of curious mood to it as well.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.
