The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1408124). This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

This piece originally began with the idea of the repeated chords in the right hand which I came up with near the end of 2018. I stumbled across this chord progression and developed it into the first eight bars of the composition. I liked the sound of the main section so I decided to use a Rondo form which is structured as ABACA with section A as the repeated chords in the right hand.It was a lot of fun to write this piece and I learnt many new things whilst writing, especially creating a good structure and developing the A section when it returns throughout the piece. The middle, near to the end section with the Alberti bass gives it a nice break between all of the heavy repeated notes. That's one thing I would have done differently in this piece; separate it a little bit more from the heavy repeated chords.The context and idea behind this piece is a bit more abstract than my other pieces as I usually aim to have a story behind my music but it was born out of a musical idea rather than a philosophical one. However, it seems to convey a frantic mood as well as some times for rest and slowing down.There are some sections that I personally think are still a bit basic, which I think with more experience I will be able to write better. I would have to say the start of the second page, or the ascending chords part sounds quite nice. Overall, I'm fairly happy with the end result, and I have another piece to fully release in the near future. I plan on narrowing down certain parameters to further develop my composition techniques and skills.

This track sets the scene for the whole album, a short but exciting story about the adventure of the curious squirrel named Whiskers. The title of this piece is a cliché for fairy tales but I thought it would fit for this album as the idea of the album is a bit of a fairy tale, or somewhat of a magical story.The piece encapsulates the entire story from beginning to end, a kind of foreshadowing of what is to come. It begins with a slow but curious melody reflecting the curious nature of Whiskers and then the melody becomes more active as things begin to escalate. It then takes a turn into a very active melody with lots of movement as the story reaches its climax. Finally, the melody returns to the original motif that we heard at the start which leaves the door open for the rest of the story. We had a brief look into what is to come, but we are yet to actually start the story.

This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

Initially, I wanted to write something that is fun, upbeat, and in a jazzy style. Similar to the music from the game Mario Kart by Nintendo. The main theme comes after the short intro section and this idea returns throughout the composition in a rondo form where other sections are heard in-between the main theme.As this was my first time writing for brass quintet, there was a lot to learn about each instrument to ensure that everything was playable and sounded good together. Writing this composition as well as having it performed and recorded taught me a lot about writing for brass quintet and there are many things that I would do differently if I wrote this piece again.As for the name, there is a long story behind how I came up with it which I won’t get in to but the word ‘Zank’ is German for an angry argument and the word ‘Zippity’ is a made-up word that I thought sounded fun with Zank. Sometimes titles aren’t as deep as they seem to be!

The piece begins and ends with warm chords as well as a slow, flowing melody that rests on top. This short introduction encapsulates the cooling air and the fading glow of the sun as the stars start to show themselves spotted throughout the night sky.Most of the piece is built upon flowing arpeggios, initially in the left hand, but later in the right hand too. These arpeggios are reflective of the twinkling stars scattered in the night sky. The simple, slow moving melody drifts above the arpeggios and creates an overarching arc to the piece, reflecting the spiral of the milky way visible from our planet. The culmination of these elements creates a dreamy and sparkly atmosphere to mark the end of a beautiful Sunday.

They share stories, laugh, and explore the corners of the house together, learning more about one another with each step.Excitement builds as they realise there’s so much more to discover outside these walls. With a shared eagerness to show off their homes, they decide to leave the abandoned house behind. Whiskers leads the way, Pippin by his side, as they venture into the woods, ready to explore each other’s worlds and embark on new adventures together.

The melody intertwines with these harmonies, emphasising their richness and adding to the overall lushness of the piece. Structurally, the composition is divided into sections, with a playful melody in section B evoking the carefree joy of children playing in the fading sunlight. I decided to record this piece and release it to the world finally, so you can listen on Spotify and other streaming services from about a week from this comment.About the piece itself. This piece is called 'Daytime Dreams' and is my very first piece of music I have ever fully composed. I chose this name because it reflects the world we live in as very fast paced and always moving, changing ideas and parts reflect different things happening but the main theme always comes back - the same old daily routine. In the middle of the piece there is a much more calm and relaxed style used which is meant to be the Daytime Dreaming in the midst of everything else; taking a step back from all the 'chaos' in your life. A shadow! Whiskers heart begins to race once again, he needs to get out of here as quick as he can, something else is here and it could be out to get him. Whiskers jumps out of the attic and scurries down the stairs. He needs to be quick though because he can hear the other creature not far behind him. He looks for an exit out of the house but he has no luck. Time is running out and he needs to get out or hide before he is caught.Whiskers finds a safe spot to hide once again behind a rotting bookshelf that does a decent job to conceal himself. He can relax now but he needs to be quiet to make sure that the other creature doesn’t find him. He waits for a while and doesn’t hear much movement but he can’t be too sure. Whiskers thinks that the other creature must have lost interest and ventured elsewhere so he decides to leave his hiding spot and explore the house some more.

This piece was the first piece that I came up with for this album and it prompted me to write the rest of the album in a similar style. The idea for ‘Sunrise’ actually came from a 30 day composition challenge in which you had to write a new idea for a piece every day for 30 days. I think the prompt for this one was a sunrise, hence the name of the piece. I think when I was writing the piece, I imagined watching a colourful sunrise amongst the rolling hills of the countryside which fade into the horizon. This is the only piece with a flute along with the piano which I think works well for this piece as it’s a relatively simple one.

Now that the story has begun, we are introduced to ‘A Squirrel Named Whiskers’! This piece is all about Whiskers, his curious nature, and the adventure he is about to set out on. The piece begins out as a timid, careful melody that slowly creeps around. Then the piece takes a turn into a vibrant and cheerful melody with a constantly moving accompaniment that reflects Whiskers’ energetic and vibrant nature.There are a some points where the melody goes off on a tangent which reflects Whiskers’ sporadic nature but he eventually returns back to his usual self. Halfway through the composition, the piece takes a turn and becomes much more active and tense. The loud dynamics as well as the foreign key reflect what Whiskers the Squirrel is known for, his curiosity to venture into dangerous and unknown places.Luckily however, he returns back to his safe and usual self which is reflected by the return of the original melody that we heard at the beginning. Like ‘Once Upon A Time’, this piece is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the rest of the album.
