Love Is Pleasing - this traditional Irish song exists in many versions but this one is based on a version recorded at Kilrush Fleadh Cheoil, County Clare in the Summer of 1967. The singer was a young Dolly Mac Mahon singing unaccompanied at the bar of the pub, the melody is beautifully decorated and I have borrowed some of her ideas. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions but adapted to suit a male singer. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

The Song Of The Birds - El cant dels ocells is a traditional Catalan Christmas song and lullaby. It tells of nature's joy at learning of the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. The song was made famous outside Catalonia by Pau Casals' instrumental version on the cello. This version has the famous melody, with an original accompaniment written by Simon James on Classical Guitar, for solo voice. The lyric is the English one used b Joan Baez on her Christmas album Noel (1966).

DML #721999. Published by DML (A0.1120784). A popular Christmas carol, the tune usually used today is from an 1848 edition by Lowell Mason for The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). There has long been speculation over how much a part Handel's Messiah had in Joy to the World. However, resemblances between Messiah and Joy to the World, have been dismissed as 'chance ' by Handel scholars today. It seems likely that the tune as we know it was probably from an 1833 publication by Thomas Hawkes with the title “Comfort�, Author Unknown. I have combined Handelian elements with the tune that most people know to create an arrangement that works well for guitar quartet retaining the bounce and vigour of the carol. Score available.

I wanted to try and capture the essence of a birth where the mother knows her child faces death by execution from the minute of conception even though the purpose is to save humanity. I do not think you can remove the joy of it whatever the final outcome but it must have been an extraordinary realization for Mary at that moment. Score available.

Süßer die Glocken nie klingen (Sweeter the bells never sound) is a popular Austrian carol with text by Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger to a traditional Volkslied (folk song) melody, first printed in 1860. This version is taken from the Vienna Boys Choir for both the lyric and the melody. I’ve arranged it for tenor and treble where the treble takes the melody for the first two verses but for the final verse the tenor takes over the tune while the treble sings what might be considered a descant. Published by DML (A0.1143138). Joan Cererols (1618 – 1680) was a Spanish composer and Benedictine monk. Cererols was born in Martorell. He entered the choir school Escolania de Montserrat around 1626. Cererols took his first steps in music under the direction of Father Joan Marc, a famous organist. He is known today chiefly for a single villancico, the beautiful marizápalos a lo divino - Serafín que con dulce armonía . The marizápalos was a song with a special harmonic pattern that often served as a framework for improvisation. This arrangement is for guitar quartet and solo guitar (Guitar 5). The quartet parts are easy, the solo guitar part is more challenging. The piece is fascinating, at times a dialogue between the solo guitar and the quartet but at other times the quartet splits into two giving a dialogue between three groups.

Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period and not specifically for use in church. A Mother's Child (El Noi De La Mare) is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. This is a lovely tune and suits the guitar well, using two voices allowed some development of the original melody.
