The setting comes from my two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (available at Sheet Music Press) which I am gradually rearranging for different performers. There is already a version for solo flute and other instrumentation will be offered eventually. The melody is also associated with the Easter carol, Now The Green Blade Riseth. The original version was for solo violin and organ (also available on SMP Press) While the organ part could mostly be played on a piano,  this version incorporates the organ pedal notes more clearly. The chorale melody was used by Bach in his St Matthew Passion, and is also in many hymn books as O Sacred Head Sore Wounded. For advanced performers, it is suitable as Prelude music throughout Lent, perhaps especially at a Tenebrae service. It could also be programmed as part of a recital. It is over five minutes in length. A MIDI recording is provided, and a performance with violin and organ is available in that version's listing. Suitable for church services and seasonal concerts, I have performed this very effectively with my choir positioned down the side aisles of the church, then processing up the center aisle during the final verse. This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a cello solo with piano. Also available as a violin solo, it is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! A MIDI recording is provided.
