By Flavio Regis Cunha - Traditional. By Gregorian Chant, XV Century. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Christmas,Classical,Film/TV,Instructional,Sacred. Score. 16 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #6656831. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.597585).

Beautiful, exotic and inspiring arrangement for the well-known Gregorian chant. The arrangement proposes a cathedral atmosphere, with the piano pedal often mixing sounds and chords to provide the reverberation of a cathedral. The text of the first stanza was placed in Latin to evoke the Gregorian ambience of the first centuries of sacred vocal music. You will love playing and singing this arrangement. It will really feel like a cathedral. Your audience will love to hear it.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, is a song for the Advent period, that is, the four sunday period before the day of Christmas. It's a period of expectation, of wait for the coming of the Messiah. the anthem has a centuries-old and curious history: text and music came from countries different and from different periods of the story! The text already existed in the eighth century! and it was very sung! But the first publication that his if you know it is from the year 1710, coming from the city of Cologne, Germany. The melody we know today, was associated for the first time to the text in 1851, in a English hymnal of that year. But the origin of melody remained obscure. the mystery was solved in 1966, only when Marry Berry, English musicologist, discovered in the National Library of France, a manuscript from the 15th century that brought the melody score, but associated with another text, Bone Jesu dulcis. So, both melody and texts are, in fact, centenarians, but they were not born together: they were joined very late! But this union has become eternal: impossible imagine O Come, O come Emmanuel sung with another melody, just like the melody, our acquaintance, associated with another text!

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Traditional. 6 pages. Jmsgu3 #917022. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1329051).

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen is one of the oldest and most popular Christmas carols from 16th-century England. The earliest known printed edition was published in 1760. The song has been known by different names throughout history, including God Bless You, Merry Gentlemen and God Rest Ye, Merry Christians. The lyrics convey the message of comfort and joy, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the tidings of salvation from Satan's power. The song has been featured in various cultural works, including Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Despite claims that the music originated in the 15th century, evidence supporting this is lacking, and the earliest known source documenting the existence of the carol dates to the mid-18th century. The song is widely misunderstood as being addressed to merry gentlemen, but the phrase God rest ye merry actually means God make you mighty or God keep you strong. The melody is more than just a Christmas song; it conveys a strong religious message and serves as a rallying song to show the world the true meaning of Christmas.

Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Children,Contemporary,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 19 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #4898821. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972652).

This anthem is a choral fantasia on the Reformation hymn Aus tiefer Noth. The text is the English translation by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) of Martin Luther's versification of Psalm 130, known in the Latin liturgy as the De profundis (Psalm 129). It is found in many English hymnals Out of the Depths. The chorale tune associated with Aus tiefer Noth is attributed to Martin Luther; it appeared in Johann Walther's chorale-book of 1524. Using this five-hundred year old tune, this anthem draws on 15th-century Flemish polyphony and mid-20th century jazz (specifically, parallel motion of block-chords, walking bass, and major-seventh chords) for its tonal character. This work calls for optional organ and SSATB choir, in which the Soprano I part may be sung by children.

This psalm is most associated with Lent, penitential worship, funerals, and worship following tragedies and catastrophes.

The present setting was composed by James Siddons in January 1989, and is the first in his long series of settings and interpretations of the Psalms for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations and musical styles.

Composed by David W. Barber. A Cappella,Christian,Early Music,Jazz,Medieval. 25 pages. David W. Barber #920028. Published by David W. Barber (A0.1333731).

I wrote this piece in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversary

of the Toronto Chamber Choir, a fine early music choir I have sung with since 1998.

Using the  opening of the well-known Gregorian chant Gaudeamus omnes (and changing

the text to let us rejoice in music, Gaudeamus is a five- minute musical history tour

through the various time periods the TCC sings. It begins with plainchant, then two-voice

organum of the 11th-century Notre Dame school of Leonin and Perotin, followed by

three-voice hocket of a slightly later period. Then a nod to the 15th-century Dufay motet

Nuper rosarum flores (which the TCC has performed.) Next comes some 16th-century

Tudor music -- Byrd, say -- including some false relations and a typical English cadence.

Then comes an allusion to Purcell, specifically the pleasing dissonance of the “voice of the

Turtle†from My Beloved Spake. Then comes a little Bach-like fugue (or fughetta) based on

the Gaudeamus motif. Since the TCC rarely performs Classic/Romantic repertoire, we

jump immediately to a jazzy ending in compound meter -- imagine Byrd meets Brubeck,

based on one of my own earlier pieces for solo piano, but with elements of the Gaudeamus

melody. And all that in five minutes. Phew!

Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,A Cappella,Advent,Christmas,Sacred. 6 pages. Robert A. Howard #6496055. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998890).

This carol for unaccompanied SATB choir sets a well known but anonymous 15th Century text. The five verses pass through a sequence of keys, returning to the opening key for the final one. Each verse begins with a simple melody, initially stated alone, then appearing in various canonic forms on subsequent verses. This is then always followed by a rich chordal passage of 'added note' harmonies, in a reverential and meditative manner. The piece is designed for most good choirs to be able to perform unaccompanied, and parts invariably move by semitone or tone movement. It is appropriate for any size of 4-part choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs.
