Wie aus dem Werkverzeichnis Purcells bekannt ist, hat er zu einer Reihe zeitgenössischer Dramen Bühnenmusiken geschrieben. Zum Teil handelt es sich um Gesangsszenen, hauptsächlich aber um Folgen kurzer Instrumentalstücke: Ouvertüren, Zwischenmusiken und Stücke, die an passender Stelle während der Handlung vorgetragen wurden. Die vorliegende Suite ist von Purcell zum Trauerspiel Abdelazer or the moor’s revenge komponiert worden. Das blutrünstige Drama stammt von Aphra Behn (1640-1689), der ersten englischen Schriftstellerin, die mit Schreiben ihren Lebensunterhalt verdiente. Purcells Rondeau benutzte Benjamin Britten als Thema in seinem bekannten Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. This is an original setting of a text commonly associated with a movement from Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, for use in worship or concerts at Christmas. It is an accessible 4-verse carol which uses modality and a lilting compound metre to convey rocking movement, within a folk style. Interest is provided by a contrasting duple feel on the last line, and a harmonic twist (picardy third) at the end of the verse (appropriately on the word 'surprise'). The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ. Versions for SATB choir, SA choir, and for solo voice, are also available via Sheet Music Plus.

This is a simplified arrangement of the Rondo from The Abdelazer Suite by Henry Purcell for Trombone Quartet.

Abdelazer is a 1676 play by Aphra Behn. Purcell wrote this suite of incidental music in 1695 containing 10 movements, of which the Rondo is the 2nd. This movement was used by Benjamin Britten as the theme for his set of variations The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra , which is probably where you recognise it from.

Pride & Prejudice is a 2005 film based on the popular Jane Austen novel of the same name. This second major motion-picture, Academy Award-nominated version was produced by Working Title Films, directed by Joe Wright and based on a screenplay by Deborah Moggach. It was released on September 16, 2005 in the UK and on November 11, 2005 in the US. The soundtrack to the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice was composed by Dario Marianelli and performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano) and the English Chamber Orchestra. Marianelli received an Oscar nomination for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score and two World Soundtrack Academy nominations. A Postcard To Henry Purcell is based on a theme from Henry Purcell's incidental music for Abdelazar, also used by Benjamin Britten in The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. This arrangement was wirtten for Piano.

Textural variation in the piano and choral parts provide variety in each verse. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ. British composer Frank Bridge is mainly remembered for his beautiful chamber music. The Four Pieces from 1912 are originally for Violin and Piano and are titled:

Mr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Trombone.  There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the Great War, WW I.  Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.
