The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

Now that the story has begun, we are introduced to ‘A Squirrel Named Whiskers’! This piece is all about Whiskers, his curious nature, and the adventure he is about to set out on. The piece begins out as a timid, careful melody that slowly creeps around. Then the piece takes a turn into a vibrant and cheerful melody with a constantly moving accompaniment that reflects Whiskers’ energetic and vibrant nature.There are a some points where the melody goes off on a tangent which reflects Whiskers’ sporadic nature but he eventually returns back to his usual self. Halfway through the composition, the piece takes a turn and becomes much more active and tense. The loud dynamics as well as the foreign key reflect what Whiskers the Squirrel is known for, his curiosity to venture into dangerous and unknown places.Luckily however, he returns back to his safe and usual self which is reflected by the return of the original melody that we heard at the beginning. Like ‘Once Upon A Time’, this piece is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the rest of the album.

I hope that this piece brings you to your happy place where you relax in the warmth of the sun and take a break from the busyness of life.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

Central to this structure is a broken chord motif, initially presented as quavers and later evolving into semiquavers. As this motif transfers between hands, it symbolises the shifting dynamics of the storm, heightening the piece's dramatic tension and adding depth to its narrative.

The melody intertwines with these harmonies, emphasising their richness and adding to the overall lushness of the piece. Structurally, the composition is divided into sections, with a playful melody in section B evoking the carefree joy of children playing in the fading sunlight. Warm offers a musical journey that embraces the comforting embrace of a tranquil evening, inviting listeners to bask in its cozy glow.

The idea for ‘Sunrise’ actually came from a 30 day composition challenge in which you had to write a new idea for a piece every day for 30 days. I think the prompt for this one was a sunrise, hence the name of the piece. I think when I was writing the piece, I imagined watching a colourful sunrise amongst the rolling hills of the countryside which fade into the horizon. This is the only piece with a flute along with the piano which I think works well for this piece as it’s a relatively simple one.

The title of this piece also heavily influenced the direction of this composition. I think I began with the ostinato idea that is heard at the beginning and then thought of the title as I was continuing to write the piece. The ostinato is meant to create a sparkly sound that ebbs and flows slowly and quickly throughout the piece. The piece slowly evolves as it goes on with new additions in both the right hand and the left hand and the melody toward the end of the piece is slowly revealed after many iterations from the very beginning.I think one of the really important aspects of this piece is the phrasing as it really is one continuous idea that doesn’t stop until the very end. The phrasing is essential for the piece to make sense and breath naturally. So the dynamics, use of rubato, and accents are all very important tools to be used in order to bring out the true nature of this piece.

This is the second album that I have released and it is another soft piano album. Ever since I published my first album ‘Sunday’ I have been wanting to write another one because I enjoyed writing the first one so much. I wanted to write even better pieces than the first one as well as a couple more pieces too. When thinking about a theme for this album, I decided to go for the season of summer and write music that reminds me of summer such as the warm breeze, the fragrance of the trees and flowers, and the sparkle of the sun on the water.In a lot of the pieces in this album, I explored the line between the ambient and melodic world with some pieces featuring a strong melody while others cycle through a chord progression in a certain pattern. This is something that I like to explore in a lot of my music as I think a melody is a great way to make a piece of music memorable but I also find that less melodically driven pieces still have their place in telling a story or setting a mood.So, if you are listening to this album or learning it, I hope that you find each piece enjoyable and that there is one that sticks out to you as your favourite. My intention is for you to listen to them while you drive, study, work, or have a rest or do anything else to make those moments a little more enjoyable and special. It was a great experience working on this piece together as we learnt how to incorporate each of our own ideas into the piece as well as work together through sections. It was great to share ideas with each other and get feedback from one another on how this or that could be improved or changed which ultimately led to a better finished product.The idea we had in mind for this piece was an anime opening which was inspired by the anime Steins;Gate. The first page includes a calm but mysterious intro followed by a chordal pattern called constant structure that leads into a lyrical melody in the right hand while the left hand continues the chordal pattern. The pace is picked up on the second page where there is a great contrast from the first page. We spent a lot of time on the second page, paying attention to each and every bar to make sure it flowed well and added something new and exciting to the piece. We also used the Royal Road Chord progression in this section as it is a common progression heard in anime music.

Now Whiskers has come across this mysterious house in the forest, he approaches it with curiosity and cautiousness. This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.
