Sunflowers is a 5 page advanced level piece in the key of B major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. Kansas is known for its sunflowers, and no matter where I find them in my travels, I love the way they seem to dance when the wind is just so. It’s that swagger that sparked the idea for this little piece. Wheat is a 7 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A flat major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. Doc Bradley's Waltz is a 10 page intermediate level piece in the key of F major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This piece initially sprang, as most of mine do, from an improvisation. It was while providing music at the memorial service for my friend David Bradley in 2008 that this piece started flowing through my fingers. As I improvised the prelude, this melody caught hold of me, and in the days following the service, I composed the rest. This is inspired by and dedicated lovingly to the memory of my mother, Edith McCracken, born and raised in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Like this piece, she talked a lot and was both sweet and stormy - and if she had lived to hear it, I think she would’ve really enjoyed this piece. Skipping Rocks at Shoal Creek is a 14 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of E major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. I rarely visit any body of water without scouring the shoreline to find good skipping rocks. My father taught me this beloved skill, and he started me early. Near Galena, Kansas, there is a place called Shoal Creek which, as a small child, I called ‘The River And Throw Rocks.’ My sweet and simple memories of this place are what I aim to bring to life in this piece. This piece is a joining of two separate ideas that were created back in the early 2000s when I was frequently collaborating with my friend, percussionist Alfred Lund. It was Alfred who suggested this title, and, like the idea behind the piece itself, I’ve carried it ever since. The Storm's Promise is a 9 page advanced intermediate level piece in the key of A minor. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This, like ‘Lullaby’, also originally appeared on Wrestling Angels, and it was inspired by a particularly strong thunderstorm I experienced while visiting friends and family in Kansas when I was a teenager. The original recording was much more robust, and I really enjoyed approaching it anew as a solo piano piece for The Open Road. Lullaby is a 3 page intermediate level piece in the key of A flat major. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This was originally recorded and released on my debut cassette, called Wrestling Angels, in 1994. It is a simple melody that came to me in my teenage years that helped soothe me at night while trying to fall asleep. I hope it soothes you as well!
