The original recording was much more robust, and I really enjoyed approaching it anew as a solo piano piece for The Open Road. Though I was born in Missouri, I do think of Kansas as my home state - it’s where I spent the first five years of my life. One of the most beautiful sights (there or anywhere, in my opinion) is that of wheat fields holding up the sky for as far as the eye can see, swaying gently like waves upon the ocean. That sight was the inspiration for this piece. It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. I rarely visit any body of water without scouring the shoreline to find good skipping rocks. My father taught me this beloved skill, and he started me early. Near Galena, Kansas, there is a place called Shoal Creek which, as a small child, I called ‘The River And Throw Rocks.’ My sweet and simple memories of this place are what I aim to bring to life in this piece.
