Tears Dry on Their Own is a song by English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse (1983-2011) from her second and final studio album, 'Back to Black' (2006). It was released on 13 August 2007 as the album's fourth single. While the melody and lyrics are composed by Winehouse, the music behind her voice is an interpolation of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 1967 song Ain't No Mountain High Enough, penned by husband-and-wife song-writing team Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. With a soul-Motown feel, this song became one of Winehouse's most popular and distinctive tracks and is featured in the documentary about her life 'Back to Black' and also in the 2024 motion picture, which shares the same title, starring Marisa Abela as Amy. Opening with a majestic flourish, this arrangement soon settles into the familiar sound of the recording, with added alto saxophone solo section at the end and a reflective close, featuring horn duet. It made its debut in the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. According to Philip Furia and Michael Lasser, the song was added at the last minute, and it was thanks to a panicky phone call from vaudevillian Belle Baker to Berlin, who complained that the score lacked a ‘Belle Baker song.’ They also write: “Berlin resented the interpolation of songs by other composers into the score of his shows, but he must have been delighted at the chance to work one of his songs into a score by the young songwriting team who were already being compared to Gilbert and Sullivan.�.

I Didn't Know What Time It Was is a popular song composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Lorenz Hart for the 1939 musical Too Many Girls. Introduced by Richard Kollmar and Marcy Westcott in the stage musical, early hit versions were recorded by Benny Goodman (vocal by Louise Tobin) and by Jimmy Dorsey (vocal by Bob Eberly). The song was later interpolated into the score of the 1957 film Pal Joey, sung by Frank Sinatra, and has become a jazz standard. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills just for fun!
