History: ‘The Lark in the Morning’ is considered to be a variant of the jig ‘Hills of Glenorchy’. The tune is highly popular and has been widely performed. It has also been associated with a variety of titles over the 19th and 20th centuries, with ‘The Lark in the Morning’ finally being settled on in the latter half of the 20th century. The tune can be heard in the mid-1990’s film ‘The Devil's Own’ during the house-party scene in honour of Tom O’Meara’s (played by Harrison Ford) daughter's confirmation.

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed Adoramus te, Christe the year the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock (1620). He was an Italian composer, string player and choirmaster. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history.

After the loss of his wife and subsequent years of depression, Monteverdi found his own renaissance in the Basilica of Venice as their music director. He invented opera and poured himself into church music, eventually becoming a member of a monastic order after surviving the plague. His exquisite small pieces were a great part of his complete works. As he aged, they reflected his journey through the stages of faith.

Thomas Weelkes (ca. 1576-1623) published, during his lifetime, five collections of madrigals, but also composed a considerable amount of sacred music in his position as organist and choirmaster at Chichester Cathedral. This madrigal is notated for treble voices, but was probably performed by males an octave lower. Here, the piece is transposed to suit a mixed choral ensemble.
