One of the Op 4 Sonatas (1725) and originally for violin, this Sonata In G has become a favourite with recorder players, though not easy to obtain. This edition contains (1) soprano recorder part, with editorial trills and mordents, plus a written out ornamented cadence to the penultimate bar of the opening Largo; (2) keyboard part with figured bass; (3) bass continuo (cello, viola da gamba, or bassoon).  All tempo markings are editorial; the keyboard realisation is editorial and can, of course, be modified at will, as can ornamentation of the recorder part.  NOTE: a limitation of my notation software has necessitated using hash for the figured bass sharp sign, and for the figured natural, I have used hash cancelled with a slash. A lovely, approachable Sonata.

The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardized throughout and,wher e missing,r econstructed from parallel passages. How can two hands do all this at once, you might say? Easy, well, sort of easy, anyway. The left hand plays the melody up high AFTER playing the open fifth low, crossing over the stationary right hand. in each measure. The harmony of the right-hand arpeggio changes slowly and subtly as the melody floats above. Some high ledger lines, with note above three lines alphabetically marked for ease of reading. Chromatic harmony with mixed accidentals in right hand. A joy to play, and very pleasing to the listener, I think, anyway... if I don't believe in my music, how can I expect players and teachers to do the same! Lasts about a minute and 45 secs. A faster OR slower tempo yields a more cascading or contemplative effect.

This sonata in three movements is the first of a group of three sonatas for guitar by the Tyrolian composer and mandolin/guitar virtuoso  Leonhard von Call (1767-1815).The source for this edition is the clearly written manuscript of the three sonatas in the Boije guitar music collection of the National Library of Sweden, marked as Gi Boije 615.The manuscript seems to be based on a 1924 publication of the three sonatas by N. Simrock / Musikverlag / Berlin with catalogue number Verlag 763.Although Von Call was a virtuoso instrumentalist, he seems to have focused on teaching amateurs rather than performing. Consequently, much of his music is not of a very demanding nature, but still well composed and well suited to the instruments for which it was written.From about 1798 until his death in 1815 he was quite successful as a composer in Vienna, and  he composed and published about 150 works, mainly chamber music for different combinations and much vocal music with guitar accompaniment.
