Most musicians struggle from time to time with how long it takes to compose new music. That was definitely true of most of these tunes, but Seventh Sun came to me in just a couple hours on a Sunday morning during my writing process. Listening back, it seems I was creating a nod to Chick Corea's Humpty Dumpty, but at the time I wasn't consciously thinking about Chick's masterpiece. ​ The title refers to the day (the seventh sunrise of the week) as well as a play on words referencing the mythological seventh son trope. ​ Gerald Clayton's genius is apparent here, as the tune is extraordinarily hard to play and he had only a short time to learn it.

The blues sensibility resonates so deeply with me, and this tune comes straight from an attempt to imitate and assimilate the cadence, delivery, and phrasing of blues vocalists. ​ In order to maintain interest for the listener, I wrote the piece to modulate key centers for each soloist. While this track has only myself and Gerald soloing, it's particularly fun to play live with multiple musicians getting turns in various keys. ​ The title refers to a food dish in the Southeastern U.S.

Loosely based on the chord changes to Tune Up, I wanted to write a bouncy, fun trio piece for us. The title again references a conversation, this time during the process of moving my piano–at one point is was leaning precariously in one direction. ​ The B section of this tune modulates again to 3/4, in another attempt to add understated interest to the tune.

Bebop is, in my opinion, the most complex and difficult style of music to master. While I'm far, far from commanding this style, I wanted to write a piece that showcases both my striving towards and affection for bebop. ​ As in many bebop compositions, I created this melody based on the chord changes to I Got Rhythm, a common practice in the period.

Many New Yorkers have a real love-hate relationship with the city, and I'm no different. This tune references my struggles with the ups and downs of my life in New York, symbolized by the static energy in the first part of the main melody that morphs into a more aggressive forward movement.

Here's my homage to one of my favorite contemporary bassists, Rodney Whitaker. Nicknamed Big Money by Wynton Marsalis, Rodney played for years with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, whose recordings in the '90s were hugely influential for me. ​ The Left Side was the title of one of the tunes Roy wrote for the group, and it's inclusion in my title was an additional reference to the importance of this time in my musical development. ​ I tried to capture something of the spirit of that time in the composition, and the fact that Ron Blake was also a member of these important Hargrove ensembles added extra weight to the recording for me.
