1 Piano,4 Hands,Piano Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1127872 Composed by Philip Le Bas. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. Score. 12 pages. Philip Le Bas #728481. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.818179 Composed by Philip Le Bas. Christian,Contemporary,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 11 pages. Philip Le Bas #5770087. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818179). This setting of Psalm 130 (Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord) was written as a response to the covid-19 lockdown crisis. It is a prayer for help in the midst of difficulty and sin, waiting for God with hope in his compassion and forgiveness. Its tempo marking of soulful, but rhythmic highlights the character of the weary, bluesey theme in B flat minor and its falling chromatic accompaniment. However, there are signs of hope throughout the setting, and the last verse mixes its principal key of G major with the original rise and fall of the minor third interval (G to B flat). Hope is, after all, sure and certain, yet it is a trust in a God who is ultimately unseen and unknownable.Psalm 130: Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice,O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If you, O Lord, should mark our iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared. I wait for the Lord, I wait for the Lord.My soul waits, and in his word I hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord, for with the Lord there is steadfast love and great power to redeem. The Lord will redeem you, O Israel, from all your iniquities.

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1126313 Composed by Philip Le Bas. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred. Score. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #727017. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1126313). A new Christmas carol by Philip Le Bas for unison voices (with occasional divisi) and piano, setting the words of William Blake's poem A Cradle Song from his collection entitled Songs of Innocence. The very title of Blake's poem calls out for it to be set to music. Indeed the poem is a straightforward lullaby for the first few stanzas, sung softly by a mother over her sleeping baby, as she marvels at the wonder of this beautiful infant and expresses her love for the child. Her own anxieties and weeping for the child remind her of the Christ-child who also wept as a vulnerable baby. But as God incarnate he wept for me, for thee, for all, and brought peace to heaven and earth. (Blake uses the word beguile perhaps to indicate the paradoxical nature of a weeping God bringing redemption to a suffering world by becoming a vulnerable human baby himself.) The composition aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in the vocal parts, so that it can be sung easily particularly by a parish choir. However, it also attempts to capture some of the beauty, drama and mystery of the scene expressed by Blake. The piece begins and ends in stillness, and there are gentle climaxes here and there, reflecting some of the rise and fall of the poem's lyrics. It could be sung by a mixed or single-voice choir, but note should always be taken of the predominantly quiet dynamics of the piece, especially in the first half. https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1216185/Product.aspx https://plbmusic.blogspot.com A Cradle Song from Songs of Innocence by William Blake (1757-1827) Sweet dreams, form a shade O'er my lovely infant's head! Sweet dreams of pleasant streams By happy, silent, moony beams! Sweet Sleep, with soft down Weave thy brows an infant crown! Sweet Sleep, angel mild, Hover o'er my happy child! Sweet smiles, in the night Hover over my delight! Sweet smiles, mother's smiles, All the livelong night beguiles. Sweet moans, dovelike sighs, Chase not slumber from thy eyes! Sweet moans, sweeter smiles, All the dovelike moans beguiles. Sleep, sleep, happy child! All creation slept and smiled. Sleep, sleep, happy sleep, While o'er thee thy mother weep. Sweet babe, in thy face Holy image I can trace; Sweet babe, once like thee Thy Maker lay, and wept for me: Wept for me, for thee, for all, When He was an infant small. Thou His image ever see, Heavenly face that smiles on thee! Smiles on thee, on me, on all, Who became an infant small; Infant smiles are His own smiles; Heaven and earth to peace beguiles.

Bassoon,Harpsichord,Treble Recorder - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1148465 Composed by Philip Le Bas. Baroque,Chamber,Christmas,Contemporary. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #748639. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1148465). A new composition by Philip Le Bas for the standard baroque ensemble of treble recorder, (baroque) bassoon and harpsichord in a modern idiom! The inspiration for the work is a poem by G K Chesterton entitled A Christmas Carol (see below), contrasting the tranquility and brilliance of the Christ-child lying on his mother Mary's lap with the weariness of the rest of the world. The music draws on a simple setting the composer wrote of these words (The Christ Child) but disrupts the flow with occasional non-harmonic notes and some surprising key changes, gradually shifting the tonality downwards to a more peaceful ending. A Christmas Carol poem by G.K.Chesterton The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap, His hair was like a light. (O weary, weary were the world, But here is all aright.) The Christ-child lay on Mary's breast His hair was like a star. (O stern and cunning are the kings, But here the true hearts are.) The Christ-child lay on Mary's heart, His hair was like a fire. (O weary, weary is the world, But here the world's desire.) The Christ-child stood on Mary's knee, His hair was like a crown, And all the flowers looked up at Him, And all the stars looked down.

Mixed Percussion Bassoon,Clarinet,Double Bass,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1126887 Composed by G Rossini / O Respighi. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical. 173 pages. Philip Le Bas #727527. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1126887). A wind decet (plus double bass) arrangement by Philip Le Bas of La Boutique Fantasque (The Fantastic Toyshop) by G. Rossini and orchestrated by O. Respighi. Actually, fantasque in French means fanciful, whimsical or even magical, and the original score is a wonderful set of pieces forming a ballet concerning a toyshop owner who creates cleverly moving puppets. In this arrangement five sections are chosen to make a chamber suite: 1) Overture 2) Mazurka 3) Tarentella 4) Pastorale 5) Can-Can The ballet is full of fun, ending with the puppets seeing off customers who want to separate two of the Can-Can dancers who are in love with each other. Think toyshop and you will understand the marching toy soldiers of the Overture, the dancing dolls of the Mazurka, the hide-and-seek chases of the Tarentella (originally a dance to ward off the tarantula), the cuddly warmth of the Pastorale, and the craziness of the Can-Can! Optional percussion (triangle, plus anything that can be bashed) has here been scored in the final movement to add to the general riotousness...

Piano,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201702 Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. Score and part. 24 pages. Brandon Nelson #800317. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1201702). Jogo de Cartas is Portuguese for “card game.†I opted for the Portuguese to honor my patron for this piece, tenor saxophonist Philippe Trovão of Lisbon. In this work, I celebrate four favorite card games.War is a relatively simple game in which each player is dealt half of the deck. The players play one card and the player with the larger card value wins the “battle.†If both players play an identical value, a “war†is started. There are variations on the game at this point, but in one popular version, each player places three cards face down then play another card face up—whichever player has the highest card takes all the cards. The object is to win all of the cards in the deck. In this musical setting, the sax and piano are each a “player,†and each plays cards (translated into rhythmic values) with the conflict and victory painted in dynamic, sometimes dissonant vitality. In Solitaire, the sax plays alone as one plays this game alone. And, just as in the game, each phrase (or suit-based pile) becomes longer, more complex, and ends in an excited flurry of activity as “victory “ is achieved! The third movement, Blackjack, illustrates the deceptively-simple game of chance, with gradually ebbing and flowing tension until, in this case, the (sax) player takes the hand. The number 21 features prominently in the construction principles of the movement as a hand totaling 21 is considered the best in the game. The finale is a wild ride portraying a newer card game called Egyptian Rat Screw. In this colorful and fast-paced game, players flip one card up in turn, continuing to do so until one player puts down a face card. The next player then has several chances (based on the specific face card played) to match or beat that card. In a interesting quirk, if two players play cards of equal rank, the player who “slaps†the card pile first wins all of the cards in the pile. This unique game was fertile ground for musical interplay, illustrating both the back-and-forth and the more aggressive aspects of play!

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1198799 Composed by J. Arcadelt. Arranged by Alessandro Macrì. Christian,Classical,Early Music,Film/TV,Sacred. 10 pages. Music Macri Editions #797882. Published by Music Macri Editions (A0.1198799).

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.818159 Composed by Traditional plainchant. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 3 pages. Philip Le Bas #3491311. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818159). This setting of the traditional Advent plainchant is based around a harmonized refrain using the original Latin words: Rorate coeli de super et nubes pluant justum (Drop down, O heavens, from above and let the skies pour down *justice.) The music and the words express the Advent theme of a cry for justice and salvation in the midst of despair. The traditional verses making up the Advent Prose, based on various parts of scripture, are sung in English unison plainchant, and they express the feelings of one living through a disaster (specifically the fall of Jerusalem in the sixth century BC.) The third and fourth stanzas become more hopeful in their words, especially the famous words (from Isaiah 40) Comfort, O comfort my people, Here the setting introduces some gentle harmonization, leading to a final return of the Rorate chorus in unison and a harmonized hope-filled coda.
