Full Score and parts for concert band. Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite (1924) along with Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat for Military Band (1921) and Second Suite in F for Military Band (1922) are amongst the most performed works in the wind band repertoire. At the time of their composition, these works helped establish what is now the standard instrumentation used for wind band works. As Sylvie was Walking is a beautiful old English song. It has been collected by composers as noteworthy as Ralph Vaughan Williams and performed by some of the world’s best-loved folk acts.

The text tells of a young girl walking by a river, speaking to a stranger of her lost love and deep sadness. The modal inflection of the melody is typical of the traditional English style and this setting shares the melodic material between instruments. This version also passes between two keys to make a piece of greater substance suitable for concert performance.

Alía is a composition that was inspired by the type of modal melodies composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams collected from rural areas in England and Scotland. The simplicity of peasant life, coupled with its profound knowledge of Mother Nature, is reflected in the very cantabile melody that dominates this work. To honor the equally rich peasant cultures that still live in rural areas in my native Colombia, I have included rhythmic patterns extracted from the Bambuco, a syncopated, ternary musical expression that has resounded for hundreds of years amidst the beautiful mountains of central Colombia. - Alexander Klein.
