The singer was a young Dolly Mac Mahon singing unaccompanied at the bar of the pub, the melody is beautifully decorated and I have borrowed some of her ideas. The lyrics are a fusion of various versions but adapted to suit a male singer. The guitar accompaniment is an original work by Simon James.

The Song Of The Birds - El cant dels ocells is a traditional Catalan Christmas song and lullaby. It tells of nature's joy at learning of the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. The song was made famous outside Catalonia by Pau Casals' instrumental version on the cello. This version has the famous melody, with an original accompaniment written by Simon James on Classical Guitar, for solo voice. The lyric is the English one used b Joan Baez on her Christmas album Noel (1966).

I wanted to try and capture the essence of a birth where the mother knows her child faces death by execution from the minute of conception even though the purpose is to save humanity. I do not think you can remove the joy of it whatever the final outcome but it must have been an extraordinary realization for Mary at that moment. Score available.

The tune appeared for the first time in 1865 in a folksong collection of Vinzenz Maria Süß (1802–1868), founder of the Salzburg Museum. There are various English translations but this one is my own and I have tried to stay close to the original German version supporting the idea of a lullaby, a mother trying to get her baby off to sleep. I have added a fourth verse which is essentially the first verse but with the words changed so that the baby is now sleeping. Score available.

Süßer die Glocken nie klingen (Sweeter the bells never sound) is a popular Austrian carol with text by Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger to a traditional Volkslied (folk song) melody, first printed in 1860. This version is taken from the Vienna Boys Choir for both the lyric and the melody. I’ve arranged it for tenor and treble where the treble takes the melody for the first two verses but for the final verse the tenor takes over the tune while the treble sings what might be considered a descant. El Noi De La Mare, in English A Mother's Child, is really a lullaby but is so strongly associated with Christmas that it can be considered a carol. It has a great many verses but I have chosen three that I both like and felt I could translate. The tune is lovely and this arrangement for two voices and guitar takes advantage of that both in the guitar part and the harmonised vocal part. Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth. Joseph and Mary (Josep i Maria) has an English lyric which, like the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original.
