The song is about Sheeran's close friend and laments a stillborn baby five months into the pregnancy. This arrangement is a combination Ed Sheeran’s guitar part and the bass part to give a complete accompaniment for one guitar. The original key was G minor but here it is in E minor an easy key to use on the guitar, if you want G minor simply use a capo at the 3rd fret (which is what Ed Sheeran nearly always does to find the best key for his voice).

The words describe the peace of the infant Jesus and his mother as the baby is sung to sleep. There are various English translations but this one is my own and I have tried to stay close to the original German version supporting the idea of a lullaby. The carol can be played with just the guitar part but I have added a flute, an oboe and a cello to allow more performers to be used if desired.

The aria Schafe können sicher weiden (Sheep May Safely Graze) is the most familiar part of this cantata and the subject of this arrangement for guitar quartet. This aria is often heard in many formats at weddings and various Christmas celebrations.

Published by DML (A0.928264). A popular Christmas carol, the tune usually used today is from an 1848 edition by Lowell Mason for The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). The name of this tune was given as Antioch, and was attributed as being From Handel.  . Consequently, and with Mason's attribution to Handel, there has long been speculation over how much a part Handel's Messiah had in Joy to the World. However, resemblances between Messiah and Joy to the World, have been dismissed as 'chance resemblance' by Handel scholars today. I have combined Handelian elements with the tune that most people know to create an arrangement that works well for guitar quartet retaining the bounce and vigour of the carol.

The original version was published in 1785 and was an immediate success, a classical French love song written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini (1741–1816) taking its text from a poem by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755–1794), which appears in his novel Célestine. The most famous version of the 20th century is undoubtedly that of Elvis Presley. He changed the words and only used the tune of the chorus – Plaisir D’Amour – adding in a second section to what became ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’. Joan Baez in 1966, The Seekers with Judith Durham in 2009 at their reunion concert, Nana Mouskouri, Mary Hopkins in Welsh have all recorded the song though they used different English lyrics as the basis for their versions while keeping the French Plaisir D’Amour. This arrangement uses the French lyrics and follows Martini’s original harmonies but is arranged to better suit the guitar. It is a more comprehensive song with two other sections which always return to the original Plaisir D’Amour so you might consider it a chorus. I have added a translation of the French text into English which can be sung to the Martini melody.

Published by DML (A0.1305680). The Coventry Carol is an English Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew: the carol itself refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children. The music contains a well-known example of a Picardy third. The melody sits well on the guitar, so much so that this arrangement is based on changing key from E minor to A minor to D minor and back again to E minor with the melody always present. In the D minor variation the tune is in the bass.

Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellens Gesang III, D. 839, Op. 52, No. 6, 1825), in English: Ellen's Third Song, was composed by Franz Schubert in 1825 as part of his Op. 52, a setting of seven songs from Walter Scott's 1810 popular narrative poem The Lady of the Lake, loosely translated into German. This arrangement is based on Schubert’s own arrangement for guitar. He created guitar accompaniments for quite a few of his songs as the instrument was popular at the time and some of his friends played it.

Published by DML (A0.928250). This song is based on a Colombianas a Flamenco style imported, as the name suggests, from South America. There has always been a rich interchange between Spain and South America, not so surprising perhaps. I had written the beginning as a solo piece but when Lynieve heard it she said it gave her a strong image of a little girl playing outside in the sun. So I just let her go with it. The lyrics are mostly hers but I added a line here and there and a lot of the melody sprang naturally from the lyrics. We tried to retain that original image of childhood but with just a hint of the unavoidable growing up. Although the lyrics are in English it forms a group with Torito and Una Pena Quita Pena as it is based on various styles of Flamenco.

Published by DML (A0.1173666). Guinnevere is a song written by David Crosby in 1968. The song is notable for its serene yet pointed melody and its unique lyrics, which compare Queen Guinevere to the object of the singer's affection, referred to as mi'lady. In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. I have arranged the song in standard tuning as re-tuning your guitar can be very time consuming. In order to do this successfully I have made some changes to the original accompaniment, nothing drastic and the feel of the guitar part is still the same. The version for trio (guitar and two flutes) is taken from the various live performances and has an extended structure compared to the original song. The harmony has a deliberate mediaeval feel to it in keeping with the atmosphere of the song. You could use any two instruments for this, on the recording I made of this arrangement  for the album The Great Music Of Crosby Stills Nash And Young (2021) I used guitars for everything.

Published by DML (A0.1316579). Air On A G string is August Wilhelmj’s 1871 arrangement of the second movement of J. S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No 3 in D major BWV 1068. The arrangement differs from the original in that the part of the first violins is transposed down so that the entire piece can be played on just the violin's lowest string (the G string, hence the name). In performance, that part is generally played by a single violin (instead of by the first violins as a group). This is however an arrangement of the original “Air� from the Orchestral Suite. Bach's third Orchestral Suite in D major, composed in the first half of the 18th century, has an Air as second movement. The music of the Air is written on four staves, for first and second violins, viola, and continuo. The interweaving melody lines of the high strings contrast with the pronounced rhythmic drive in the bass. I have followed this quite closely in the arrangement for guitar quartet in F major.

Published by DML (A0.928252). This is a complex song using the rhythm of a Flamenco rumba but with a mixture of finger style and strumming, it will need time and patience to do it well. It uses well known coplas from traditional Spanish sources and is naturally about love but with some fairly pointed remarks like the copla that ends ‘a shoe once worn, discarded, I never wear again’. One of the best things about the Flamenco approach to lyrics - you are never tied down to just one version so you can change the song according to the mood you’re in. This was first performed at the opening of the 2007 Croydon Jazz Festival.

He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, but recorded it in 1982 after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. It was released as Yazoo's first single on 15 March 1982 in the United Kingdom, and became an instant success on the UK singles chart, peaking at number 2. It was released again in 1983 in an a cappella version by the Flying Pickets and became the UK Christmas No 1 that year. Vince Clarke originally wrote the music for the song on a guitar, and transposed the riff into synthesizer notes. This is clear from the chord structure so I have arranged it using a constantly descending bass for the first two verses. For the final verse, to give a sense of drama which is clear from the lyrics, I have switched to a three fingered chord rhythm but kept elements of the descending bass. The little tune on the outro could be sung but if you have a second guitarist could also be played.
